About the Role

The Consultant Psychiatrist is accountable for the delivery of clinical services to the consumers of the EDMH and AOD Hub and SVMH, through providing high quality clinical services, contributing to service evaluation and research and displaying a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development in psychiatry.

The Consultant Psychiatrist AIS provides clinical leadership to the EDMH and AOD Hub, in partnership the Clinical Director and Manager EDMH.

  • Clinical leadership and collaboration/coordination of assessment and care and discharge/disposition planning, as appropriate with ED clinicians and other multidisciplinary staff for ED consumers with acute mental health and/or AOD presentations, not requiring acute psychiatry inpatient admission, and assessed as appropriate for the non-admitted and admitted  EDMH and AOD Hub.
  • Primary and secondary consultation for EDMH and AOD Hub consumers.
  • Promotion and liaison with the relevant community services, NDIS providers, private psychiatrists and general practitioners.



Classifications for this position will range from HN18 – HN58 (in-line with experience)

Your Contribution

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery or equivalent.
  • Fellowship of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
  • Registration with AHPRA.
  • Excellent qualities as a clinician and good communication skills with consumers and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical leadership in a multi-disciplinary psychiatric service.
  • Current National criminal history check, or willing to obtain

About the Emergency, AOD and Mental Health Departments

The St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) Emergency Department (ED) Mental Health (MH) and Alcohol and other Drugs (AOD)Hub is a statewide funded admitted (6 short stay beds) and non-admitted service, embedded and integrated within the ED. The EDMH and AOD Hub provides assessment and management (including short stay, admitted and non-admitted, evidence-based and multidisciplinary team coordinated care and discharge to primary and/or specialist care as appropriate ) of  ED consumers  with acute mental health and/or AOD presentations, who are not requiring/ or requiring acute psychiatric inpatient admission. The multidisciplinary team consists of a consultant psychiatrist (5 sessions/ 17.5 hours per week), psychiatry registrar (1 FTE), Hub coordinator, AOD Consultant, mental health clinician, peer support workers (consumer and carer), and ED medical and nursing staff.

St Vincent’s Mental Health (SVMH) includes an adult area mental health service for the inner city areas of Yarra and Boroondara.  The adult mental health service components are:  the Footbridge Community Care Unit (CCU), the 44 bed Acute Inpatient Service (AIS) located on the St. Vincent’s Hospital site, and two community mental health services (CMHS) at Hawthorn and East Melbourne (Clarendon CMHS). Community mental health services comprise the Triage and Crisis assessment and Treatment (CAT) service , Continuing Care (CCT), Mobile Support and Treatment (MST),Homeless Outreach (CHOPS) and Public Housing Tenancy Support (STAY) services. The adult prevention and recovery care (PARC) service provides a short-term, intensive residential service with a recovery focus. A Consultation & Liaison Psychiatry Service is provided to the health service. NEXUS Dual Diagnosis Service, the Body Image and Eating Disorders Assessment and Treatment Service (BETRS) are regional services. Statewide services are the Victorian Dual Disability Service, the Victorian Transcultural Mental Health Unit and Dual Diagnosis Education and Training Unit. The AIS includes 5 beds designated as the Koori State-wide Inpatient Service and linked to the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service.The Primary Intervention and Care Team (PICT) provide a primary mental health service function for general practitioners, encompassing  Hospital Outreach Post Suicide Attempt Engagement (HOPE) program.  

All SVMH clinical staff are expected to be familiar, and practice in a manner consistent with the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce.
