The Director, Health Policy and Reimbursement is a member of the Corporate Healthcare Economics and Market Access team. This Health Policy professional will serve as the resident expert on payment policy and reform that pertain to the company’s current and future portfolio of products.  In collaboration with others, this professional will identify and interpret relevant elements of payment policy and reform for the divisions to use in the management of their businesses. This person should have a material understanding of Medicare reimbursement and a general understanding of Commercial plans.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: (Detailed Description)

  • Provide Partnership and Collaboration: Partner across decentralized and geographically dispersed organizational structures. Become a trusted colleague to divisional leadership teams by taking an active interest in their business to understand the risks and opportunities related to how payment policy and reform could impact product adoption. Become the key contact point for health policy strategy and questions.
  • Provide Direction. Provide strategic and tactical direction to the business based on existing and proposed coverage, coding, and payment policies by governments and private entities. Identify emerging reimbursement issues, and areas of government focus. Develop key messaging for communication as well as recommend appropriate action plans to best represent the Company's interests among public and private sector audiences.
  • Inform and Guide: Clearly communicate key policies and regulations in our ever changing U.S. health care environment i.e., fee-for-service, Medicare Part C, shift to ACOs & Bundled payment programs, federal/state health care reform risk, shift from payer to provider, Medicare and Medicaid Managed Care. Design.  Develop and deliver training programs that explain the risks and opportunities in this environment that can impact specific Stryker businesses.
  • Work closely with Corporate Health Economic Lead to collaborate and develop value propositions supporting portfolio items that target employers, payers, and providers.
  • Monitor, influence and communicate proposed and implemented product specific market access threats and opportunities (such as reimbursement, payment, etc.) for Medicare and private payers.
  • Work with other senior health policy experts within relevant trade associations, e.g. AdvaMed working with colleagues from other member companies to weigh in on Stryker’s behalf as principles, policy and advocacy positions are developed to address the bandwidth of items these associations will seek to develop on behalf of industry.
  • Communicate changes within the health care environment i.e., fee-for-service, shift to ACOs, federal/state health care reform risk, shift from payor to provider, Medicare and Medicaid Managed Care.
  • Experience in contributing to growth through securing favorable reimbursement status for key products.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Managed Markets/Market Access and how the various mechanisms of reimbursement affect customer buying decisions.
  • Demonstrate the capability and experience to educating others on how health policy, e.g. payment reform, will impact Stryker businesses and how they can proactively turn this into an opportunity and/or defensive planning.

Education & Special Trainings:

Undergraduate degree/ preferred Masters in a relevant area (Health Policy) scientific or business discipline

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum: 10 years’ directly related experience
  • Preferred:  5 years agency experience and/or commercial insurance sector
  • Fluency in English
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to influence others in constructive, collegial manner
  • Awareness of US health policy environment and payment policy & reform

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Must be able to operate common office equipment (e.g. computer, printer, copy machine, calculator, telephone, etc.).
  • Must be able to review printed and handwritten materials.
  • Must be able to communicate telephonically and with large groups of people.

$145,700 - $321,000 salary plus bonus eligible + generally eligible for short-term and long-term financial incentives + benefits.  Actual minimum and maximum may vary based on location.  Individual pay is based on skills, experience, and other relevant factors.

Travel Percentage: 20%
