About The Team

The Disney Entertainment & ESPN (DE&E) Technology Design team thinks beyond what is possible today. They discover, disrupt, and chart a course to where our fans and consumers will be next. Design brings the Disney magic to life by building digital customer experiences via the entire portfolio of both consumer-facing products and internal products and tooling. This includes Sports, Entertainment, News, Streaming and Enterprise Products and Experiences.

As Director, you’ll foster our mission of delivering brand-specific consumer experiences, building cohesive user journeys within a product family, partnering across Product, Engineering and other business partners, and working with Design team members directing rapid visual concepts, producing high fidelity visual design. We are a multi-disciplinary design team where you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with many design groups and specialties to create innovative products that people love to use.

The Director, Deisgn for ESPN Core and Video will be responsible for ushering in a new era of ESPN and how our customers consume their favorite sports.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Ideate, create, grow, and ship products, at scale for sports fans all around the world
  • Establish clear vision of the future of ESPN and Video and pursue forward-thinking design solutions
  • You will provide day-to-day design leadership that builds a shared understanding of the holistic user-centric intersection of design, content, business, and engineering
  • You will be a design activator, working to deliver a platform vision and strategy that balances revolutionary framework projects along with a plan for evolutionary, iterative updates to realize a more extensive vision
  • You will operate as the primary point-of-contact on critical strategic initiatives for design leadership and cross-functional partners
  • You will be expected to partner with a variety of teams, inspiring confidence that your team will deliver compelling user experiences that are cohesive, inclusive, and well informed on time.
  • With fellow design directors, you will contribute to the creative ethos of the design team’s culture, community, processes, diversity, and inclusion while setting new standards in excellence
  • Lead and inspire a team of product designers, providing mentorship, guidance, and support to foster their growth and development.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to define and prioritize design initiatives that align with business goals and user needs.
  • Drive the end-to-end design process, from concept ideation and wireframing to high-fidelity prototyping and user testing, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience across all platforms.
  • Champion a user-centered design approach, advocating for the needs and preferences of our diverse user base and leveraging data-driven insights to inform design decisions.
  • Establish and maintain design standards, patterns, and best practices to ensure consistency and scalability across our product suite.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscape to identify opportunities for innovation and differentiation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and evolve our design system, ensuring alignment with brand guidelines and technical feasibility.
  • Effectively communicate design concepts, rationale, and trade-offs to stakeholders at all levels, fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • MUST be a sports enthusiast
  • 12+ years of Design/Creative experiences, including 5+ years of management experience.
  • Have managed, lead, and inspired teams of designers.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing a range of projects demonstrating your design process, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Expertise in user interface design, interaction design, information architecture, and visual design, with a keen eye for detail and craftsmanship.
  • Have resource planned and staffed projects and groups based on the available skills to deliver excellent design solutions on time.
  • Posess a broad and comprehensive understanding of different systems, theories, and practices of design leadership.
  • Identified and set platform strategies, envisioned complex user interactions, and inspired teams to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
  • Hungry for innovation, eager to challenge the status quo.
  • Can communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization.
  • Experience managing multiple stakeholders and priorities simultaneously.
  • BA/BS or equivalent experience required
The hiring range for this position in California is $180,700 to $242,300 per year and in New York is $189,300 to $253,800 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
