Job Description:

The Advanced Technologies and Innovations Group at Stryker Neurovascular is looking for a Materials Scientist- Polymer R&D in Fremont, CA to support the development of new polymers, materials, and additives for biomedical applications including but not limited to embolization. This individual will be responsible for process optimization of mixing viscous materials and syringe filling. Additional responsibilities include test method design and validation, identifying and validating appropriate sterilization processes and vendors, and characterization of raw materials. Prior experience with polymer solutions, viscous materials, and/or heterogeneous dispersions is highly preferred.

  • Optimization of lab-scale mixing process for viscous polymer solutions (homogeneous or heterogeneous), hydrogels, microparticles, etc.
  • Evaluation and validation of sterilization methods for polymer formulations
  • Development of lab-scale process for syringe or vial filling (for example, minimizing the introduction of air bubbles, uniform loading of heterogeneous mixtures, etc.)
  • Development of device-specific testing protocols for validation of formulation or process changes, such as quantitatively describing the dispersion and stability of heterogeneous suspensions
  • Evaluation of suppliers for raw materials and leading internal/external validation methods
  • Participates in the selection, training, and performance appraisal process of project resources, including temporary contract SMEs, as required

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline required. Advanced degree may be considered toward years of experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years engineering or polymer science in a regulated industry essential

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with biomaterials or polymers
  • Applied knowledge of FDA & International medical device regulations
  • Experience in development, characterization, and processing of polymer-based materials in medical device or pharmaceutical industry
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to express ideas and collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills including risk management experience
  • Experience in process validation
  • High level of PC skills required (MS Excel, PowerPoint and MS Project)
