Job Description

Reports to: DIRECTOR OF NURSING

I. Job Summary

Manages professional nursing support in Womens Health and coordinates care planning with other disciplines. Assists with implementing unit goals and objective. Acts as a liaison between departments. Consults with staff, physicians and Womens Health director about problems and interpretations of MUSC policy to ensure patient and staff needs are met. Utilizes appropriate lines of communication within the nursing department. Assures compliance with all regulatory requirements including all state, federal, and TJC regulations related to the specific unit and MUSC. Supervises, institutes, and evaluates all nursing interventions.  

II. Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree in Nursing with five (5) years clinical experience of which three (3) years experience in management or supervisory capacity and be a Registered Nurse licensed in the State of South Carolina or a compact state..  

 III. Work Environment:

Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illnesses). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Must be able to handle emergency or crisis situations. May perform emergency care. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours.

IV. Supervisory Responsibilities:

Oversees the daily operations of the unit.

V. Financial Responsibilities:

VI. Essential Functions:

1.   Evaluates staff performance, provides feedback, coaching and mentoring.

2.   Identifies/conducts needed educational programs to facilitate staff professional development.

3.   Assesses Performance Improvement Plan activities and assists staff in meeting goals.

4   Utilizes Studer principles in care giving and staff interactions.

5   Conducts routine utilization review.

6    Ensures appropriate staffing.  Assists in the daily adjustments to staffing required having appropriate nurse/patient ratios. Complies with matrix.

7.   Responds to SHIELD investigations.

8.   Provides first line customer service response.

9.   Orients new employees.

10.  Monitors daily infection prevention and control compliance.

11.  Assumes on-call responsibilities.

12.  Ensures discharge phone calls are completed in Discharge Call Manager.

13.  Reviews patient satisfaction data and collaborates with director regarding 90-day improvement plans.

 All other duties as assigned.

VII. Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of the job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to:

Sit, walk, stand, use your hands, reach, stoop, talk, hear, and smell.  Lift or exert energy up to 50 pounds 25% of the time, up to 100 pounds 50% of the time, and more than 100 pounds 25% of the time.

Maintain close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors) and distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen move up/down or left/right) and depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances).

VIII. Mental Requirements:

Possesses the ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations. Able to write reports, correspondence, and/or manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees, and medical staff.

Able to perform math functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide), and perform more complex math functions to include calculating percentages, averages, volume, ratio, and interpreting graphs – using numbers, money, and units of measure. 

Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Deals with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal, and written instructions.

IX. Population Served - - cultural and age specific competencies:

This position primarily interacts with adults and geriatric age groups and provides direct/indirect patient care. The CTM must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.

The CTM must be able to understand and respond to the expectations and needs of the organization as well as patients, family members and visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Additional Job Description

Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) degree and a Master's degree in a related field from an accredited college/university; Master of Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) preferred. A minimum of five (5) years of nursing work experience required (three years of nursing experience and two years of supervisory experience). Certification in specialty area preferred or completion within one year of eligibility strongly encouraged. Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or compact state required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
