About the role:

The General Surgical Skills Trainee – Unaccredited role will be based at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and its affiliated training rotations.

Current available training rotations include:

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery, St Vincent's Public Hospital
  • General Surgery Nights/Relief, St Vincent's Public Hospital (in St Vincent's Network hospitals and SET trainee relief as required in the Eastern General Surgery SET Network)
  • General Surgery, Goulburn Base Hospital

St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney (SVHN) is the Sydney public division of St Vincent’s Health Australia, which is the largest diversified health care organisation within Australia’s not for profit and Catholic health care sectors. St Vincent's Hospital Sydney is a 350 plus bed tertiary referral hospital. The Hospital provides adult medical, surgical, mental health and diagnostic services for the local community and specialty care for patients throughout NSW. The hospital offers specialised cardiac services and is the centre for cardiac transplant services for NSW. Centrally located in Darlinghurst, St. Vincent’s Hospital Sydney sits on the edge of Sydney’s business district, close to major transport and superb cafes. St. Vincent’s is a teaching Hospital of the University of NSW and the Australian Catholic University with 17 professorial chairs attached to the University of NSW. The University of Notre Dame is co-located within the campus grounds. We are seeking a skilled and energetic general surgical skills trainee who possess a passion for person centred care. We welcome applications from people who are able to work closely with all members of staff and be able to: ​

Selection Criteria:
1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia

2. A minimum of 3 years of postgraduate experience and previous experience in a surgical department relevant to the position or specialty interest, including sufficient clinical experience in order to undertake the key accountabilities for this role

3. Commitment to relevant SET training program: either completed or on track to complete the requirements for admission to SET training. This includes the completion of desired courses, exams and terms

4. Demonstrated ability to complete rotations as allocated and required in the Eastern and Greater Southern Surgical Skills Network

5. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise, including demonstrated excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style

6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services. Demonstrated ongoing commitment to further self-education, professional development and to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management

7. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment

8. Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia
