This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

Our diverse team of manufacturing engineers play a crucial role in transforming our facilities through implementing the adoption of ground-breaking technologies. From raw sheet metal to final assembly, this team is reinventing the tools and processes that will enable GM to deliver on our promise to create an all-electric future.

The Design & Build Team Lead (DBT Lead) functions as a technical expert across all programs for the commodity specific parts they are responsible for. The individual also leads a cross functional team of engineers in the engineering, design and build phase of the die value stream. The DBT Lead is responsible for gathering lessons learned and stamping plant feedback as well as the implementation of engineering, design and build and bring best practices into the commodity. Work is of a very broad nature across the entire GVDP and requires a highly motivated, self-directed individual who is comfortable with ambiguity and displays both technical skills, and the ability to lead and influence peers.

What You’ll Do 

  • Work with Studio, Product, Commodity Engineering, Commodity Execution, Die Program Management, Die Suppliers, Stamping Plants and Assembly plants to ensure cost, quality and timing expectations are met for each program.

  • Interface with each of these teams to ensure lessons learned and technical feedback are applied to continuously improve their commodity.

  • Facilitate cross-functional Design & Build Team meetings to drive on-time quality deliverables from engineering through production for your part commodity.

  • Lead the daily activities of the SE/FEs on the Die Engineering team assigned to your part commodity to provide manufacturability assessments of sheet metal product designs based on formability analysis, die processing and MR/GBOP evaluations.

  • Lead the team to resolve engineering, design and build technical issues.

  • Lead One Engineering Correlation Wall activity (Dimensional, Surface, Process/MR and Tonnage) for your part commodity.

  • Support SEs for DFM issue escalation and Die Lead Program Managers in escalation and strategy reviews as needed.

  • Participate in Advanced Engineering Buyoffs, Stamping Health Checks, MMR/P2 Readiness meetings, Strategic supplier scoping sessions, Vendor integration and routine meetings, design gate reviews, Global GBOP and Die Peer reviews.

  • Approve stamping deviations and support presenter in the Manufacturing Stamping Strategy Meeting.

  • Review all Quality Alert Bulletins for their part commodity to evaluate and implement improvement.

  • Investigate, accept, or reject all process change proposals with Vendor for make panels.

  • Review proof tool and pre-production tooling when available.

  • Support FPR events and analyze correlation of engineering and compensation package.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)​​ 

  • 10+ years of combined experience across Die Engineering, Processing, Design, Verification, Tryout and Production.

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, material engineering or other equivalent engineering areas

  • In depth knowledge of die development and die processing. Basic concepts of die design.

  • Basic level in using commercial software packages(Autoform, Dynaform, Pamstamp, LS-DYNA and/or similar formability analysis codes)

  • Basic level in using NX, Vis Mockup, and Teamcenter Engineering skills

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others, motivate employees and elicit work output.

  • High level of oral and written communications skills

  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult

  • Exhibits appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals

  • In depth knowledge of secondary and primary tryout events and processes

  • In depth knowledge of stamping press types, automation and simulations

  • In depth understanding of weld tool systems, checking fixtures and ETACS

  • Broad knowledge of tool and die, die to press interface issues and stamping critical success factors

  • Specific knowledge of engineering discipline (e.g., CAE, mechanics, physics, materials, and manufacturing methods) within job-related area
