Job Description

Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as on-site. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to PATAC in Shanghai, China five times per week.

The Role -

Join GM in an exciting opportunity to become a Body Process Engineer.  Great opportunity to be part of one of the leading global auto manufacturers.   As part of the GM China ME team, you will be directly involved in activities involving GM Global and our China JVs (SGM and SGMW) for manufacturing process and new product program development.  As a member of the GM China Body Manufacturing Engineering team, you will be responsible for Design for Manufacturing (DFM) of major engineering projects involving body shop equipment & tooling designs and tryouts, cost/value optimization, supplier management, manufacturing processes in a centralized manufacturing engineering environment where a considerable amount of creativity and initiative is exercised.  You will also work collaboratively with a diverse group of global engineers, cross-functional engineers, and other engineering support personnel to drive quality into new product program designs for BIW parts with lean manufacturing processes throughout the entire product program development cycle for solutioning left.

What You’ll Do -

  • Review BIW part level designs and run manufacturing virtual assessments to identify body shop manufacturability issue and process feasibility for new product programs
  • Ensure Body Manufacturing Requirement (MR) is met and product Best Practice (BP) is adhered to new product programs
  • Collaborate and interface with product design engineering and CAE engineering teams for Design For Manufacturing
  • Lead virtual validation activities for Body manufacturing process in China region for new product program development including software & hardware availability
  • Collaborate and support global virtual validation activities for proof of concepts and test cases for China region
  • Working closely with China region JVs, including the PE & ME & MO & Quality teams to managing a positive long-term relationship. 
  • Be flexible to provide technical support and launch support to body shop launches and operations in China region JVs
  • Support Body program management teams through manufacturing build events and tryouts
  • Coordinate and support new project peer reviews including layout integration and lean investment for Body shops in China region JVs
  • Drive and support GMS and MQRR initiatives in China JV body shops
  • Be able to manage personnel day to day activities such as job assignments, payroll, miscellaneous support, training, and communications
  • Drive and Support Business Plan initiatives in Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost and Environment

Additional Job Description

    Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)​​ 

    • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field
    • 3+ years in Body shop manufacturing engineering, product engineering design, manufacturing integration of equipment, supporting plant projects or related experience as an engineer
    • Participated with Product Engineering development to implement effective best practices and manufacturing requirements
    • Demonstrated capability to formulate solutions that optimize part design, tooling, and processing variables to enable low cost and high-quality strategies
    • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult
    • High degree of interpersonal oral and written communication skills - ability to work across cultures and languages to achieve results
    • Conversational and technical language skills in Chinese and English
    • Working knowledge in latest version of Unigraphics (UG NX)

    What Can Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

    • MS in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and/or MBA
    • 5+ years of Body manufacturing process, launch, product interface experience
    • 5+ years of project launch experience in body shop with manufacturing process / SOR / tool tryout
    • 5+ years of automotive engineering experience developing and executing technical solutions to support new vehicle programs
    • New product program development experience as AVD manufacturing engineering for Body, Stamping and Dimensional
    • Desirable Experience in CAE commercial tools for Pre and post processing, such as Tc vis mockup /UG/Process Simulation/Process Design/ANSA /Hypermesh / ESI / Hexagon
    • Demonstrated knowledge in Manufacturing Requirements, GD&T, Datum Locating, Assembly Layout
    • Conversational and technical language skills other than Chinese and English (i.e. Portuguese, Korean)
    • Comfortable working with multidisciplinary and cross-cultural teams
    • Ability to deal optimally with ambiguity and forward-thinking environment
