About the Role & Team

Join us as part of a dynamic team and science-based culture where our mission is to Lead Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to Care for animals and the environment, Connect people to nature and Conserve our natural resources. As the Science Operations Manager, you will provide oversight and leadership for the Science programs operation and scientific input into the Animal Care Operation and Strategy. Join this team consisting of scientists and behavior management experts from multiple disciplines focused on animal wellbeing and population management, with experts in behavior, endocrinology, cognition, behavioral husbandry, population biology, environmental monitoring and welfare across multiple locations. As part of the science team, you will work in close collaboration with the Disney Conservation team in support of conservation and science goals.

In this leadership role, you will be reporting to the Science Operations Director.

What You Will Do

  • Have oversight for all internal and external research projects and collaborations as well as advise on scientific and welfare issues across teams and our field related to care and sustainability of zoo and aquarium animals
  • Craft a shared vision to encourage team members, co-workers and collaborators, and guests around the value and impact of evidence-based management
  • Lead by example with an innovative and growth mindset, through idea-generation and solution oriented approaches
  • Lead strategic goals, including timely and detailed communication across large teams, crafting an inclusive and strong team culture, and managing change and driving projects to timely completions
  • Share knowledge and stories with ASE and park leadership and external partners and provides input in decision-making
  • Cultivate scientific partnerships with internal and external collaborators, and serve the broader zoo and aquarium field
  • Lead others to apply scientific approaches to gather objective information as requested by partner teams to address issues relevant to health, welfare, and sustainability
  • Assist in developing and driving the scientific direction of the science program
  • Help build and deliver quality guest experiences that showcase evidence-based care
  • Lead individual and team contributions to The Walt Disney Company and Animal’s, Science and Environment strategic goals initiatives.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Proven ability leading a team, with a minimum of five years of leadership experience
  • Confirmed leadership skills with experience in mentoring, coaching and recognizing team members
  • Excellent experimental design skills and experience conducting research in wildlife, with a strong history of publication in peer reviewed journals
  • Understand of the role of research in modern zoo and aquarium operations, with a passion to move the zoo and aquarium field forward by applying innovative science-based management and groundbreaking behavioral husbandry approaches, and driving research related to welfare, health, and population sustainability
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and influence without authority
  • Knowledge of AZA structure and standards pertaining to research, animal welfare and behavioral husbandry programs
  • Excellent communication and project management skills (oral, written) across complementary teams
  • Passion for storytelling and connecting guests to nature and science

Preferred Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge of the various fields within animal well being
  • Involvement in AZA committees/programs
  • Experience handling operating and labor budgets
  • Experience studying wildlife in a zoo or aquarium setting
  • Instructing experience
  • Experience working with behavioral husbandry and welfare programs

Education

  • Doctoral or Veterinary Degree, or Masters Degree plus relevant equivalent experience
