This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business if more than 3 days].

The Role

Our diverse team of Manufacturing Engineers play a crucial role in transforming our facilities through implementing the adoption of ground-breaking technologies. From raw sheet metal to final assembly, this team is reinventing the tools and processes that will enable GM to deliver on our promise to create an all-electric future.

The Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for execution of major projects within the stamping plants at General Motors. The VS Engineer will provide technical expertise, project leadership in executing press projects.  In addition to that, the VS engineer will be providing project coordination and on-site resource management during execution of the project.  Responsibilities include ability to produce/modify Hardware & Software designs and perform functional validation and buy-off for Controls and Robotic Systems during major engineering projects involving tools & equipment in an automotive plant environment.

Responsibilities also include dealing with suppliers and plants and building customer relationship. The VS engineer will be responsible for project management from the design phase until execution at the plant. During this time, the engineer will interface with suppliers, plant, safety departments and others.

What You'll Do (Job Responsibilities)

  • Propose, estimate and evaluate manufacturing processes and equipment per assigned area.

  • Lead the design, development and improvements of manufacturing processes, and integration of plant floor control systems with plant floor information systems for assigned areas.

  • Evaluate expenditures for processes and/or equipment and develop SORs

  • Maintain project costs and provides accurate financial expenditures/forecasts.

  • Provide technical assistance and identifies training requirements for assigned plant operations.

  • Coordinate input from internal/external customers to better understand customer needs and/or perceptions.

  • Keeps abreast of current product developments and trends in multiple areas of expertise.

  • Actively identifies new areas for learning and to broaden technical capability.

  • Provide technical direction and project management oversight to suppliers.

  • Travel to supplier sites to support integration buy-off.

  • Communicate project status, results and lessons learned to VS management.

  • Up to 30% travel to stamping plants during execution of project

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of experience as a Controls Engineer

  • Bachelor’s Degree with major in engineering or equivalent experience/training

  • Familiar with Automotive Stamping Processes

  • Strong background in PLC, Robotic, Servo & VFD Drives

  • Broad and thorough knowledge of tooling systems and manufacturing processes across all areas of the plant

  • Strong technical background in Controls design, integration and implementation.

  • Strong experience with Press systems, Press types, Front of line, End of line.

  • Strong experience in Servo controls and servo types

  • Experienced in PLC/HMI (Rockwell PLCs and HMI, Siemens HMI) hardware & software design and startup / debug activities.

  • Experience with computer-based design tools and applications (Eplan, AutoCAD)

  • Project management and leadership experience

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Familiar with Automotive Stamping Processes

  • General knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics is a plus 

  • Knowledge of computer software as it pertains to manufacturing and plant floor systems.

  • Controls experience across multiple disciplines including Body, Paint, General Assembly, Press, Conveyor, Robotic and Plant Floor Systems.
