About the Role

St Vincent's offers a unique and personalized Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program that provides the opportunity for a long and fulfilling career in mental health. St Vincent’s Mental Health provide ongoing specialist treatment and support to meet the identified needs of consumers who suffer with a serious mental illness and associated high level of recovery support needs in the cities of Yarra and Boroondara. During your graduate year you will have the opportunity to learn and develop your skills in a supportive environment, working closely with your preceptor and the opportunity to participate in group supervision.

  • All graduates will have an opportunity to rotate to different areas of the service – subject to clinical need and skill mix.
  • Rotations include: AIS, Depaul House, Group Program, Footbridge CCU and Normanby Unit.
  • You will be required to work a rotating roster, including night shift.
  • These positions are 0.8 EFT with regular funded study days
  • You will be trained in the use of key recovery tools, and will be encouraged to develop your own creative recovery-orientated care strategies and you will work with our Lived Experience workforce.
  • The graduate nurse will participate in the mandatory academic training program that has been specifically designed to assist the graduate to develop their skills and knowledge in relation to mental health nursing over 12 months.
  • There are 20+ paid study days offered throughout the program to assist your growth as a well-rounded clinician.
  • The graduate must complete the clinical competencies provided as part of the program at the identified time intervals as set out in their training manuals.
  • All competencies, assessments and hurdles must be achieved. This educational component will allow you to obtain recognition of prior learning towards a post-graduate diploma in mental health nursing.
  • Ongoing employment if successful in the clinical and academic aspects of the graduate program

Duties include:

  • Supporting consumers throughout their recovery journeys and working alongside the multidisciplinary team
  • Actively upholding a culture of hope by using optimistic language, supporting people and celebrating consumer’s recovery efforts;
  • Supporting consumers with available resources to achieve their recovery goals through education and support around medication, coping strategies and symptom management
  • Actively challenging stigmatizing attitudes, discrimination and social exclusion in line with the Recovery Model of Mental Health Care.
  • Participating in consumer assessment, care planning and discharge planning.

Classifications for these positions will be Registered Psychiatric Nurse Grade 2 Year 1 NP11

Step 1 - Preparing your online application

The following documents are to be uploaded to Workday (Word document or PDF):

  • Cover Letter, addressed to The Mental Health Education Team Leader (Marcie Regester) outlining why you wish to be a Mental Health Graduate Nurse at St Vincent’s (maximum of one page). Please ensure you have clearly outlined which program you are applying for
  • Curriculum vitae/resume (maximum of 3 pages).
  • Academic transcript to date, with results legend.
  • 2x copies of your most recent clinical placement reports. Reports must be sent in their entirety and not selected parts or pages. If your reports are paper based, they will need to be certified (electronic placement reports do not need certification). Preferably one of your reports should be from your most recent mental health placement, unless you have not completed this yet.

Additional Information Required:

  • The name and details of two referees (one must be a Clinical Teacher, Preceptor or a senior nurse to whom you have recently reported to in mental health).
  • Ensure you inform your referee of your intention to list them.
  • All components of the application are considered when shortlisting applicants for interview. Notification for interview will be via email.

Step 2 - Attending an Interview

  • All our graduate interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams, and are in a group interview format.
  • If your application is successful, and you are offered an interview, we will give you more information regarding the interview process at that time.
  • Interviews will be conducted after the Monday 8 July to mid-August.

Step 3 - Outcome of PMCV GNMP Match

PMCV GNMP Match results will be released on Wednesday 4 September, 2024 at 10am.

If you are successfully matched to St Vincent’s you will be contacted by phone after the results have been released.

Shortlisting for this position will commence immediately.

*All January 2025 positions are recruited via the PMCV Graduate Nursing Midwifery Program Allocation and Placement Service. We will not be interviewing candidates outside of PMCV at this time*
