Sr Manager, Research Science, Pricing & Promotions Science - Seattle

Job Description

Amazon's Pricing & Promotions Science is seeking a driven Senior Research Science Manager to build & lead an exceptional group of researchers in harnessing planet scale multi-modal datasets, and navigating a continuously evolving customer and seller behavioral & econometric landscape, in order to generate the most relevant recommendations, and influence the discovery journey on billions of products worldwide.

We are looking for a talented, organized, and customer-focused sub-group leader within our Impact Optimization science organization, with a charter to infuse a deep customer-centric understanding of price and promotion quality into algorithmic optimization and recommendation initiatives that balance between long term perception & Amazon free cash flow, and near term financial business objectives.

This role requires an individual with excellent team leadership skills, outstanding business acumen, and an entrepreneurial spirit. We are looking for an experienced leader who is a self-starter comfortable with ambiguity, demonstrates strong attention to detail, and has the ability to work in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.

Key job responsibilities
- Build the right team. Lead and foster a highly talented group of applied machine learning scientists & researchers. Establish internal and external talent acquisition opportunities.
- See the big picture. Shape long term vision for Amazon's science-based perception & long term free cash flow maximizing pricing & promotions techniques
- Build strong collaborations. Partner with product, engineering, and science teams within Pricing & Promotions to deploy ML/RL recommendation, ranking, and optimization solutions at Amazon scale
- Stay informed. Establish mechanisms to stay up to date on latest scientific advancements in machine learning, reinforcement learning, recommender systems, and multi-objective optimization techniques. Identify opportunities to apply them to relevant Pricing & Promotions business problems
- Keep innovating for our customers. Foster an environment that promotes rapid experimentation and continuous learning.
- Execute successfully. Incrementally deliver towards the long term vision for Amazon's science-based impact-driving pricing & promotions techniques

About the team
Within Pricing & Promotions Science, the Impact Optimization team leverages planet-scale behavioral and product data, econometrics, and both online & offline experimentation techniques to build advanced models for discount & deal optimization, recommendation, and rankings. We maximize Amazon long term free cash flow and preserve long term customer trust by ensuring Amazon's prices & promotions are always relevant, impactful, and high quality.

Basic Qualifications:

- Ph.D. or Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning, Optimization, Financial Modeling, or related field.
- 10+ years of broad AI/ML research experience on large-scale industry problems in pricing, recommendation, optimization, advertising domains
- 5+ years of experience leading applied science teams
- Expertise in deep learning methods
- A track record of balancing project delivery with longer term research, demonstrated via publications, or contributions to the open source community.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch
- Proven written and verbal technical communication with the ability to present complex topics clearly to audiences with varying levels of technical familiarity

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience delivering and scaling AI/ML based solutions involving Reinforcement Learning, Optimization, Recommendations, Ranking
- Experience applying econometric or causal modeling techniques at scale
- Experience of influencing business or company strategy through cutting edge research and long term science vision
- Experience partnering with academic institutions for collaborations and talent acquisition

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $324,100/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
