Our strategic unit with Collins, Connected Aviation Solutions (CAS), provides advanced information management systems, products and services that enable the connected aviation ecosystem by bringing together Collins’ unique breadth of aviation products with our smart digital solutions to help us enhance every aspect of the end-to-end travel experience. The Network and Connectivity Engineering (NCE) Team within CAS Engineering has the responsibility for Air Traffic Control and Airline operational data on a secure, high-availability communication system between aircraft and their airline hosts systems and Civil Aviation Authorities. Over the next 5 years the GlobaLink Team, working in a highly hybrid collaborative environment that fosters employee engagement and teamwork, will be engineering the modernization and overhaul of the world’s largest Air-to-Ground airline operation and air traffic communication system.

Collins Aerospace is seeking a Communications Systems Engineer (P2) to support their Commercial Aviation Networks (CANS) Engineering division located in the Annapolis, Maryland headquarters. The Systems Engineer will work on the GLOBALink system, which is an air-to-ground communications system serving the commercial aviation and government air traffic authorities around the world.  GLOBALink is comprised of hundreds of radio ground stations, interfaces to satellite ground-earth stations, interfaces to hundreds of airlines and civil aviation authority systems, and complex, proprietary message processing and system management servers, all connected by a complex and sizable communication infrastructure. The system is subject to continuous change as networking and communication technologies evolve. 

This is an ideal role for anyone who enjoys leading systems solutions. YOU will play a pivotal role in this high growth and high visibility area of the Collins Aerospace company. 

What YOU will do: 

  • You will perform engineering analysis of the GLOBALink service.
  • You will perform quantitative analysis of the GLOBALink statistical data.
  • You will perform DataComm Operational Problem Report analysis.
  • You will perform audits, which includes analyzing call records and logs for all aircraft and identifying issues.
  • You will become fluent in GLOBALink’s communication protocols, including ACARS/VDL/ATN/FANS/CPDLC.
  • You will become proficient in understanding the frequency management algorithms of the system.
  • You will perform daily monitoring of the VDL/ATN statistical data and report anomalous behavior.
  • You will analyze individual aircraft and airline fleet performance issues.
  • You will analyze RF Coverage and provide ongoing support related to managing Surface, En-Route and Transition Region coverage issues.
  • You will present findings and conclusions to both internal and external groups.

What YOU will learn: 

  • You will learn to develop SQL queries to gather engineering performance data and Python programs to analyze the query results
  • You will learn the aviation market and how communication systems are critical to airline operations.
  • You will learn about the myriad systems required to offer a comprehensive communication service, such as communications protocols, billing systems, networking systems, and RF systems.
  • You will learn to represent Collins Aerospace in industry forums Implementing architectural changes and customer-driven enhancements to complex systems. Complex systems typically involved multiple servers, interfaces, networks, and databases. Experience with full life-cycle - development, test, implementation, and long-term support.

Education & Experience: 

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field or in absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience

Skills you must have: 

  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract
  • Experience with ACARS/VDL/ATN/FANS/CPDLC communication protocols.
  • Experience analyzing audits and call logs to system problems.
  • Experience developing SQL queries and Python programs to perform statistical analysis.
  • Experience analyzing transmissions in a “Hidden-Terminal” environment.
  • Experience with Tableau.
  • Experience performing quantitative analysis of large data sets and analyzing performance of complex systems through statistical analysis.
  • Experience working in a highly integrated team environment with software, hardware, and network engineers.

Employee Referral Eligible

The salary range for this role is 70,000 USD - 142,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
