Job Description:

Walt Disney Imagineering is the master planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management, and research and development arm of Disney’s Parks and Resorts business segment. Representing more than 150 disciplines, its talented teams of Imagineers are responsible for the creation - from concept initiation through installation and commissioning - of all Disney Resorts, theme parks and attractions, real estate developments, regional entertainment venues, and new media projects.

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the project team developing the next generation actuation systems for animatronic figures where performance, compact form, high-cycle reliability, and safety are critical. The candidate will be responsible for leading both in-house and vendor mechanical engineers and designers while operating within a multi-disciplinary product development team. The successful candidate will lead the mechanical engineering team through different phases of the engineering process, which includes design from concept development through final design, production, and commissioning of electric actuators within Audio-Animatronics® systems.

This position is a Project Hire position, meaning it will have a set duration based on business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead internal and vendor technical team members and translate strategic technical direction to day-to-day goals
  • Establish priorities for actuator development strategy to achieve project vision based on technical risks
  • Manage technical requirements for actuator product line
  • Work with team members and users across the organization to understand user needs and applications
  • Design and execute tests to verify actuator design and functionality
  • Perform strategic trade studies in the context of figure-level design and testing
  • Review mechanical actuator design integration, provide design comments and alternatives to actuator designers
  • Lead mechanical integration with electronics and embedded systems
  • Lead mechanical development of Audio-Animatronics figure prototype
  • Manage mechanical documentation and delivery

Basic Qualifications

What you bring to the role…

  • Extensive engineering experience to oversee and drive an engineering culture of technical excellence
  • Ability to proactively solve problems, adjust scope, and update management
  • Ability to manage complex design, fabrication and commissioning activities
  • Ability to write and review technical documents such as Requirements Specifications, Theory of Operations, Scopes of Work, Hazard Analyses and Acceptance Test Procedures
  • Familiarity with US industry and international standards applicable to electric rotating machinery and robotics.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing and quality control processes including precision machining processes and tolerance control methodologies such as GD&T.
  • Strong hands-on experience with testing, production and field support
  • Superior "clean sheet" design sensibilities

Required Qualifications

  • 7 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electric actuator design and fabrication experience
  • Mechanical design experience with embedded PCBs and electronics
  • Dynamic modeling and simulation experience

Required Education

  • B.S in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics.

Preferred Education

  • Masters in Engineering

The hiring range for this position in California is $123,000.00-$165,000.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
