For our 2024 programs, we are committed to providing mentorship and development. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Internship Program provides emerging talent with an immersive view of animation through educational seminars on craft and filmmaking, reinforced by individual and technical projects.
What You Will Do
Software Engineers on the Lighting and Materials team develop tools to author, assign, edit, and manipulate surface materials and lights in multiple DCCs like Maya and Houdini. The team is also responsible for scene generation - processing our shot and asset data into a consumable representation for our proprietary renderer.
The goal of this internship is to assist the team on one of several different possible projects. These projects are targeting delivery for our 2025 feature film release and will cover a variety of different areas in different programming languages. The specific project that this position will be placed on will depend on the skills and qualifications of the candidate.
Possible Projects Include:
- Expansion of our lighting workflows within Houdini (C++ & Python)
- Significant refactoring of scene generation for reduced memory consumption and improved performance (C++)
- Development of a new graphical user interface for inspecting relationships within our USD data (Python)
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong C++ and/or Python programming skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with user interface design
- Familiarity with UI frameworks like Qt
- Experience or relevant coursework in Computer Graphics
- Experience with USD (Unified Scene Description)
- Experience with animation workflows and tools such as Maya and Houdini
- Exposure to multithreading and parallel programming
Education
Currently enrolled or graduated within the past six months from an accredited college/university, earning a degree majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
Additional Information
Am I Eligible?
- At the time of application, must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program OR currently participating in a Disney College Program or Disney Professional Internship.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must not have completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or program.
- Must possess unrestricted work authorization.
- Must provide full work availability.
- Program Length: The approximate dates of this internship are May/June - August/September 2024. Interns must be fully available for the duration of a 12-week assignment.
- Please note the safety and well-being of our teams is very important to us. Based on government recommendations, we will determine whether this program will be in-person at our Burbank, CA studio or virtual in the coming months.
