R&D Tax Technical Consultant

Sitting within the wider Quantitative Services group of EY, the Research & Development (R&D) tax team is a highly successful team of tax, technology and science specialists who work on a variety of very high profile clients. The team is growing from strength to strength and is not only involved in supporting companies with claiming the R&D Tax Credit, but also in making grant applications and Knowledge Development Box claims, to encourage Irish companies to invest in R&D.

 

Opportunity:

This position offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join EY’s fast growing and highly successful National R&D Tax practice. This position provides a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to widen their technical and business skill set while working within a professional services environment and proactively contributing to building a business.

 

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate’s main responsibility will be to not only work very closely with the senior technical consultants on the R&D team, but also clients’ senior engineering staff and chief technology officers from across a range of industry sectors.  Leveraging from their scientific/technical knowledge and experience, the successful candidate will be responsible for analysing scientific/technical aspects of clients’ projects, assisting in determining whether those projects are eligible for R&D tax relief, and documenting why those projects are qualifying R&D projects from a scientific/technical perspective (although previous R&D tax knowledge is not necessary). The successful candidate’s main responsibilities will include:

 

  • Interviewing clients’ senior scientific/technical staff in order to develop an understanding of the technical characteristics of the projects undertaken.
  • Facilitating application of Irish tax law and Irish Revenue guidelines to identify those R&D projects eligible for tax relief.
  • Writing and reviewing scientific/technical project reports describing the scientific/technical activities of client projects to support their R&D claim.
  • Responsible for high quality delivery of advice and solutions to clients, ensuring management of risk and reputation.
  • Supporting the business in winning new clients by leveraging from industry sector expertise through the preparation and delivery of proposals.
  • Producing project budgets and timetables that are efficient and cost effective.
  • Working as an effective member of a project team, exhibiting excellent communication skills and being able to work co-operatively and create synergies with other team members of different skill sets.

 

Person:

  • Applicants must hold a 2.1 degree, or higher, in the Natural Sciences. Applicants with backgrounds in Biological sciences including biology, botany, bacteriology, microbiology, zoology, entomology, genetics, biochemistry, biophysics and other allied sciences, clinical and veterinary sciences are particularly encouraged. A PhD qualification in a relevant discipline would be an advantage.
  • Recent graduate with 1-2 years’ experience in their field a minimum.
  • Previous R&D tax knowledge is NOT required for this role although this would be highly advantageous.
  • The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate their in-depth scientific/technical expertise in their chosen discipline, and demonstrate their understanding of the commercial / technical issues faced in this sector.
  • The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent report writing, communication, interviewing and presenting skills, as well as being a team player.
  • Demonstrating an interest in other areas of science / technology would also represent an advantage.
