Req ID:

Job Description:

Are you a skilled craftsperson with an appreciation for the art of map making? National Geographic is hiring a Cartography Editor! You will research, craft, and produce high-quality, engaging maps for digital, print, and interactive storytelling. In this role you investigate a topic, find the elements of the subject that require a spatial illustration, then work in an iterative process to make that information understandable to a lay audience. This will be done on a variety of media formats, including feature articles in National Geographic Magazine, or as part of a story released digitally, or as an enhancement for an interactive experience. You will be involved throughout the story development process, working to find data, build the appropriate map to enrich and support a story, and contact and work with subject matter experts.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualization, research, and design of compelling maps, graphics, and data visualizations for media, including print, web, and mobile devices.
  • Research, collect, process, and analyze spatial data and synthesize information from authoritative sources to craft maps and graphics.
  • Write and edit captions and other text content for maps and graphics.
  • Consult with sources and experts to scope and verify information presented in cartographic products. Document sources for acknowledgements.
  • Ensure that cartographic products conform to established National Geographic Map Policy and cartographic conventions.
  • Develop and innovate cartographic methods and interactive technologies for print and electronic formats. Stay informed and trained on the latest technologies for interactive map and graphics development.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of work experience.
  • Examples of published print and digital maps crafted in a professional capacity demonstrating a skill for high-level map design, color theory and typography, and a clear pattern of creativity through innovation.
  • Extensive GIS expertise using commercial or open-source software.
  • Proficiency using Avenza MaPublisher, GIS plug-in for Adobe Illustrator
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Cloud platform (knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, w/AfterEffects a plus).
  • Strong visual and interactive design skills with a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion, projections, and the ability to iterate on effective design solutions.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including concisely explaining a problem and to articulate a solution.
  • Self-managed, able to take direction, and be committed to iterative processes.
  • Ability to grasp and critically evaluate new subject matters quickly and to evaluate data for quality, accuracy, and authoritativeness.
  • Outstanding organization and the ability to lead multidimensional projects with multiple timelines and deliverables, independently budget time and handle several tasks simultaneously under the pressure of tight schedules.
  • Familiarity with elevation and LiDAR data processing, and terrain rendering with 3D visualization software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with web development and web digital cartography, including Javascript, HTML and CSS, Map Libre, and D3.
  • Background in National Geographic’s core topics, such as archaeology, history, geography, environmental science, and natural history.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, cartography, or related field or equivalent work experience
