Job Description

In this role you will be responsible for occupant performance and restraints development for GM Vehicle Programs.  You will lead engineering projects by demonstrating initiative, creativity, independent judgment, and project management throughout the vehicle development process.  Provide technical direction while working with multiple functional groups and developing Integration solutions to meet vehicle requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate feasible and timely design recommendations and technical solutions to meet safety performance targets for the vehicle program as documented in the Vehicle Technical Specifications (VTS).
  • Work with engineering functions, program teams, suppliers, manufacturing, and others to implement design changes as required to achieve vehicle performance.
  • Balance safety requirements based on the results of safety simulations for the major safety load cases with other performance requirements.
  • Develop comprehensive validation plan, conduct confirmation testing with production hardware, complete post-test teardowns and generate appropriate documentation (PAC, MVSS, Type Approval)
  • Understand and apply GM Safety CAE standard work procedures for delivering quality models and simulation results. Utilize GM Safety CAE standard work procedures for all simulations and assure high quality models
  • Use CAE to lead restraint design, while balancing all applicable Global Safety Requirements for specific area of responsibility (For example: Frontal or Side Impacts)
  • Perform Computer Aided Engineering simulations for restraints balancing/development, evaluate Occupant and restraints performance in high-speed Frontal and Side impacts load cases for Occupant protection, etc. using LS-DYNA software.
  • Use advanced CAE tools and methods (Variation Study/DOE/DFSS) to optimize the restraint designs.
  • Work with global teams in a collaborative environment.
  • Present performance status at appropriate forums on regular basis (Safety PIT, PDT, CIT, SP-QIT)

  • DFSS Green Belt Certified
  • Full understanding of the VDP process.
  • Problem solving with support of the Integration leaders.
  • Understanding of engineering concepts
  • Has the ability to work with limited direction and independently, and make decisions based on general practices and procedures
  • Proficiency in Project Planning
  • Creativity and initiative in independent problem solving and leading multi-functional teams for issue resolution
  • Exercises independent judgement and creative solution development with minimal direction from EGM.

Required Skills, Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an (ABET) accredited University:  Mechanical, Biomedical or Biomechanical
  • Knowledge of statistical and optimization tools and techniques
  • Knowledge of engineering theory and application in automotive development
  • Working knowledge of performance integration, component manufacturing, and vehicle assembly
  • Willingness to learn new skills and adapt expeditiously
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others
  • High level of analytical ability to solve challenging problems and to integrate complex systems
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others

Preferred Skills, Experience and Education:

  • Master’s or PhD in Engineering from an (ABET) accredited University:  Mechanical, Biomedical or Biomechanical.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated proficiency with CAE or related engineering experience (DRE, validation, lab).
  • Working knowledge of CAE and Validation tools – training available in LS-DYNA, PRIMER, METAPOST, ANSA, HYPERWORKS, STIS and other CAE tools
  • Knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Global Safety Requirements and Standards – training available
  • Working knowledge of Unigraphics, TeamCenter, and VisMockup preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and performance integration related applications

This role is catergorized as Hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report onsite three times per week at minimum.
