Job Description

Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: The position require the employee to be onsite approximately 3 days per week full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility, or off-site as frequently as needed.

As an Embedded Controls Design Co-Op, you will be applying your knowledge and skill sets in the development and execution of embedded controls algorithm, and software for upcoming generation of Electric and Autonomous Vehicles! This position involves a combination of embedded software design work, modeling, simulation of models and vehicles, Software-in-Loop testing, data collection from benches and vehicles, and tools development. You will be learning new knowledge and skills that would benefit your career development and future opportunities!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and improve controls and diagnostic algorithms for safety related components, sub-systems, and smart devices for Brake-by-Wire and other embedded platforms

  • Work closely with multi-disciplined engineering teams to understand functional requirements, and implement appropriate diagnostic and control solutions

  • Use a model-based software development approach that utilizes both graphical and traditional software development methods

  • Perform Integration & Verification Testing of Integrated Software

  • Support and execute test plans, and procedures for simulating controls and diagnostics

  • Test and debug software using models, controller hardware, and vehicles to perform SIL/HIL/Integration testing

  • Participate in collaboration and innovation to develop and improve better controls to achieve GM’s zero crashes, zero emissions, zero congestion vision

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree (3rd and 4th year students) or Master's degree in one of the following areas: Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering

  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week in Canada, and for 8 or 12-month term (2-3 consecutive semesters) starting May 2024

  • Related courses and strong grades (please include a copy of your transcript with your application)

  • Strong MATLAB/Simulink experience

  • Proficient with embedded C and Python programming

  • Familiar with Controls Algorithm and Software development, implementation, and testing of real-time embedded controls systems

  • Ability and motivation to learn new technologies, engineering concept, and tools

  • High analytical ability, effective communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrates initiative by reaching beyond work assigned to improve output and/or help others

  • Have a valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, or equivalent Canadian out-of-province licence

What will give you a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Experience with signal processing such as signal filtering and frequency domain analysis

  • Experience with dSPACE/Control Desk, or similar HIL tools

  • Experience with ETAS/INCA, Intrepid/Vehicle Spy, or similar DAQ tools

  • Experience working with Agile/Scrum development processes and tools

  • Familiarity with software version control tools like GIT or similar
