Heroku is seeking an engineering leader for our Risk Engineering team. Risk Engineering at Heroku is a software team that builds software that helps the business manage risk. Notably, this includes the anti-abuse tooling that detects and removes unwanted activity from the platform. Along with making sure our platform remains secure, Risk Engineering also enforces security policies and best practices across Heroku’s software process and tooling. We plan weekly, chat daily, and work closely together. Our team is a globally distributed remote community with members excited to work together on challenging distributed systems problems.

This is a technology management role involving knowledge of programming, architecture patterns, risk concepts, defensive security, anti-fraud technologies, compliance, costs, and the latest technologies associated with managing business risk on a large PaaS platform. This role will partner with Heroku risk product manager and architect to define and deliver services.

Your Impact:

• Increase Heroku’s risk, anti-fraud, anti-abuse, and security competency across all engineering teams using a mix of mentoring, training, and hiring industry experts.
• Drive the execution and delivery risk and security capabilities by collaborating with many multi-functional teams, architects, product owners and engineers
• Make critical decisions that attribute to the success of the product
• Proactive in foreseeing issues and resolving it before it happens
• Partner with product owners and architects to align with objectives, priorities, tradeoffs, and risk
• Work closely with cross-functional teams to discover and mitigate known and unknown risks
• Ensure teams have clear priorities and adequate resources
• Empower the delivery team to self coordinate
• Be a multiplier and have a passion for team and team members’ success
• Provide technical guidance, career development, and mentoring to team members
• Maintain high morale and motivate the delivery team to go above and beyond
• Vocally advocate for technical excellence and helping the teams make good decisions
• Participate in architecture discussions and planning
• Participate in multi-functional coordination, planning, and reviews with leads from other engineering teams
• Maintain and nurture our team culture by interviewing and hiring only the most qualified individuals
• Occasionally chipping in to development tasks such as coding and feature verifications to assist teams with release commitments, to gain an understanding of the deeply technical product as well as to keep your technical skill sharp

Required Skills:

• BS or MS in Engineering, Computer Science or related disciplines or equivalent experience in technical leadership roles.
• Prior experience in engineering leadership in shipping risk and security capabilities on AWS infrastructure.
• Experience with anti-fraud/anti-abuse/defensive operations/security landscape including things like Maltego, YARA, eBPF, CrowdStrike, Amazon GuardDuty etc.
• Experience defining monitoring and alerting strategies for high-scale production systems
• 10+ years of proven track record leading software engineering teams with a distinguished track record on technically fast-paced projects
• Minimum of 4+ years of proven track record leading software engineering teams focused on security, risk, anti-abuse, or anti-fraud services.
• Experience building, delivering, and operating in AWS infrastructure.
• Experience leading large-scale distributed systems and working with microservices and/or distributed architecture
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational and time management skills
• Ability to be flexible, proactive, and comfortable working with minimal specifications
• Experience with short release cycles, the full software lifecycle, and experience working on a product that’s been released for public consumption
• Experience in hiring, mentoring and leading engineers
• Working experience of software engineering best practices including coding standards, code reviews, SCM, CI, build processes, testing, and operations
• Experience with Agile development methodologies. Scrum Master experience required
• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and product management to understand requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs
• Ability to work with architects, principal architects, and CTO to craft the architectural vision and roadmap for the organization

Preferred Skills:

• Familiarity with Heroku and Salesforce platforms

For New York-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $213,900 to $355,900.

For Colorado-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $194,400 to $296,600.

For Washington-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $194,400 to $326,300.

For California-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $213,900 to $355,900.

Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for incentive compensation, equity, benefits.
