The Bishop's School

Bishop's is a school of 800 students in grades six through twelve. Our community is committed to discussion-based, student-centered instruction. This pedagogical approach relies on close reading, critical thinking, analytical writing, experimentation, and an openness to honest and challenging discussions. It also relies on a fundamentally human-to-human interaction: Student and teacher exploring ideas and concepts together in order to reach a more in-depth, better understanding.
Every day, our faculty interacts with students individually and in small groups. Students are encouraged to create and engage in dialogue with others and to explore new ideas and solutions for both traditional social issues and those created by Miss Scripps' prediction of that "technological change." On the athletic fields, on the stage, and in the art studio, we strive for excellence through hard work and a joyful pursuit of our passions.
We are a community of learners. We understand that the commitment, dedication, and curiosity of each of our students has the potential to transform our School, our community, and our world. Above all, we want our students to understand that their approach with others, guided by kindness, fairness, and integrity, will enhance their understanding of the world and establish a foundation for relationships that will endure the test of time. While it may be true that a school is measured by what its graduates become, for The Bishop's School, it is the "becoming" part of this belief that has shaped the School's mission for 109 years. In addition to stimulating and challenging students academically, we believe that our role is to help young people learn to be morally discriminating and define ethical standards that will take them from adolescence to adulthood. We recognize that how we teach plays a crucial role in how well students assimilate information and how well they gain insight into how they will live their lives. Bishop's teachers are accomplished in their fields and bring a passion for teaching and young people, and our classes are remarkably small; most have 14-16 students. When students have spent their years at The Bishop's School, we trust that they will go forward, relying on their strengths and on the qualities that we have helped them develop while they were at Bishop's.
