Since 1888, the University of Charleston has grown and expanded to meet students' educational needs from across the nation and worldwide. The University of Charleston is an independent, co-educational residential university with two central locations in West Virginia – the main campus in Charleston and the second campus in Beckley. The University also has a robust online program.

The University of Charleston is unique in offering a performance-based curriculum focused on specific outcomes, determined to be essential abilities every student should have for a lifetime of learning and opportunity. The University of Charleston was founded in Barboursville, West Virginia, as Barboursville Seminary, affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The first campus was located in the courthouse complex abandoned when Cabell County moved its government seat to Huntington. There were 25 students enrolled.

The UC IRB must approve all research with human subjects carried out by the University of Charleston faculty and students. No research involving human subjects may begin without express written consent from the University of Charleston's (UC) Institutional Review Board (IRB).

All Investigators must complete or have completed the National Institutes of Health (NIH) training course "Protecting Human Research Participants" within the past three years. A current certificate for each investigator must be submitted with each application.
