Founded in 1900, Asheville School is one of the few remaining dedicated small boarding schools in America. This is a nurturing community, where our students and faculty genuinely know one another — thanks to family-style seated meals, senior chapel talks, and century-old traditions.
We offer a rigorous college preparatory program. Many of our graduates are accepted to the most prestigious schools in the country. The majority of our recent graduates attend colleges and universities Barron's rates as "highly selective" and "most selective." We teach 21st century and timeless skills - critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity - in a traditional setting, where students are known and loved.
Our acceptance rate is 40 percent, and we have alumni in all 50 states and about 35 countries around the world. Our 300-acre campus, with pastoral fields encircled by the Blue Ridge Mountains, is nestled in the city of Asheville, North Carolina. Architectural Digest named Asheville School, the most beautiful private high school in North Carolina in 2018.
Asheville School is unlike any school. It is located in a vibrant, lively city full of art, music, and eclectic food, set among breathtaking Southern mountains and trout-filled rivers. It encompasses 300 acres of hiking paths, horse trails, fields, woodlands, and streams. It enjoys the advantage of elegant Tudor-style buildings registered as historical landmarks, along with state-of-the-art technology and athletic facilities.
It is not, however, Asheville School's significant physical advantages that make this place unique. Asheville School is about people and relationships. We believe that the right school is one in which every student is known and loved, and we can do that at Asheville School because we are purposefully small, and we are predominantly boarding. In our intimate residential community, we eat meals family-style. We come together daily as a top school in either chapel or convocation. We rub elbows in dormitories and around campus.
We show our care for one another by maintaining high standards for academic achievement and personal conduct. Kindness, consideration, and civility are hallmarks of an Asheville School student. We want to cultivate our students' essential tools like problem-solving, analysis, creative thinking, and clear communications. However, we also want our students to live lives of honor, duty, courage, and kindness. We want them to become leaders.
Students who know they are cared for will take intellectual risks and stretch themselves personally because they are secure and safe in a place that will support them. To grow into the independent adults, we want them to become, they must spread their wings and take flight. Our students do that in this beautiful place under the watchful eye of accomplished adults who are their mentors, guides, and role models.
We expect our students to live by high ethical standards. The foundation of ethical behavior is honesty. At Asheville School, students agree to uphold an Honor Code. Students "pledge" and sign all independent work. And students constitute the majority of the Honor Council, the educational and disciplinary body that hears all Code violations. As a result, our students live with a fair measure of freedom: trusted by the adults and trusting one another.
Perseverance is the quality of sticking to the task at hand and is related to the adage, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." At Asheville School, students are encouraged to persevere in the classroom as well as the athletic arena. Students who persevere work to do better with each task.
Integrity involves being honest, trustworthy, and forthright. At Asheville School, students pledge to uphold the honor code of not lying, cheating, or stealing. Students recognize the importance in the life of being recognized as a person of integrity.
Respectful people value people, places, and practices. At Asheville School, respect for people of all races, cultures, ethnicities, and gender orientation ensures that students will feel safe in their surroundings. Buildings and grounds will be respected and enjoyed. Religious choices and practices will be honored.
Compassion complements the mission statement's goal of developing spirit. At Asheville School, compassion is manifested in our service program and our Mitchell Cabinet, the service focused group that is the oldest organization at Asheville School. Food drives, blood drives, fundraisers for people in crisis are apparent aspects of compassion. The quiet support of a friend and the help a teacher offers a struggling student are but two examples of everyday acts of compassion.
