Since it was founded in 1897, San Diego State University has grown to offer bachelor's degrees in 84 areas, master's degrees in 76 areas, and doctorates in 21 areas. SDSU's approximately 31,000 students participate in an academic curriculum distinguished by direct contact with faculty and an increasing international emphasis that prepares them for a global future. SDSU's annual economic impact to the state of California is $6.5 billion. Of SDSU's 270,000-plus alumni, approximately 60 percent live in San Diego. They comprise more than half the region's engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, and the local workforce for many other industries.
We are one of the top 100 public research universities in the nation and growing each year. We see research as a way to engage our students in education and better the world. Our researchers are educators, scholars, humanitarians, scientists, creatives, and students. We work here in San Diego and throughout five of the continents. Undergraduates play a vital role in the success of San Diego State University research and creative activities, and students benefit enormously from their participation.
Providing opportunities for students to participate in research is a priority at San Diego State University. Research opportunities help students discover which subjects interest them as scholars, allow them to gain the critical skills necessary to enter graduate school and help underscore classroom teachings' real-life applications.
The COE Global Cultural Experience offers students a perspective of both a country's diverse people and the critical issues of its society, commerce, political spheres, religion(s), and culture(s). These experiences extend an opportunity for students to explore their responsibility to the global community. There is an array of global experiences that exist on and outside of the SDSU campus. Each department should determine the various kinds of global experiences (for credit and not for credit).
The Library and Information Access support the university's diverse community's information, curricular, and research needs through the broadest possible range of resources. We are committed to information literacy, lifelong learning, and creative endeavors in a welcoming environment.
In November 2017, San Diego State University unveiled "SDSU Mission Valley," a detailed vision and planned for the land, including and immediately surrounding SDCCU Stadium. The plan features architectural renderings by Carrier Johnson + CULTURE. The university can purchase the land at fair market value and finance the construction, should it have the opportunity to do so. The plan does not rely on taxpayer dollars.
Founded in 1897, San Diego State University has grown from a small teachers' college into a national research university of 36,000 students enrolled in bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. Today, with nearly 240,000 local alumni and 6,000 employees, SDSU is one of the top economic generators in the San Diego region. According to a recent ICF analysis, an international consulting firm specializing in economic impact studies, the university generates $5.67 billion in economic activity and $457 million in state and local tax revenues each year.
To effectively serve the increasing demand for higher education and support regional economic growth, SDSU must identify expansion opportunities. However, the campus is landlocked within 288 acres. The Mission Valley site is the only nearby land capable of addressing San Diego State University's long-term expansion goals.
The SDSU Curriculum Guide has been compiled to help you prepare curricular proposals for processing for consideration for inclusion in the General Catalog, the Graduate Bulletin, and the Imperial Valley Campus Bulletin. Also included are instructions on submitting proposals for new certificate programs, a degree to be placed in the Academic Master Plan, and topics courses and General Studies courses to be included in the SDSU Class Schedule and Extended Studies catalogs. Particular attention should be given to the following information.
Graduate Affairs provides leadership and support to scholars engaged in over 100 master's, doctoral, and advanced certificate programs at San Diego State. In collaboration with faculty, staff, and students across the sciences, engineering, humanities, social sciences, arts, education, and business, our team strives to ensure the integrity and high quality of graduate degrees and facilitate their timely completion.
San Diego State University excels in innovation, research, and creative activities, mainly due to our graduate students' success. For many graduate programs, these accomplishments culminate in a thesis or dissertation expected to be of the highest quality for the field. Because research expectations and requirements vary widely, students are generally expected to develop a research plan with their Graduate Advisor or Thesis Chair in their first semesters at SDSU.
San Diego State University Media Relations is the university's representative to local, regional, national, and international media organizations. Team members determine the most compelling stories to convey, work with media to tell those stories, and frequently field requests for SDSU experts who can speak about current issues. The media team also prepares materials, including expert advisories and fact sheets about the university, and can provide media kits.
