Financial aid comes in the form of scholarships, federal work-study, federal and private loans, and grants. The amount and type of aid you receive will depend upon your family’s income and assets. Our people, programs, and services are here to help students succeed. We measure our success by measuring yours.
The Division of Student Affairs exists primarily to support and enhance the College’s academic mission of educating students. Education does not stop at the classroom door but continues in outside settings where opportunities exist for emotional, moral, social, and spiritual development. The Division works to support and enhance the College’s academic purpose of educating students.
The Division of Student Affairs is committed to supporting and enhancing the College’s academic purpose of educating students through the implementation of co-curricular programs, activities, and administrative services that focus on the development of the whole student in a Christian and intellectually stimulating environment. Because we embrace a philosophy that learning takes place in a variety of educational settings, a complement of division and other campus resources (e.g., residence halls, student union, and activities) are used to promote out-of-classroom learning and student engagement.
Students will graduate from Wiley College as competent, responsible, and well-educated members of society. They will demonstrate integrity, tolerance, and the ability to make ethical decisions in a life in which they are committed to making a difference. The Division will be recognized by students and constituents as an outstanding student-centered, service-oriented division that anticipates and plans for its students' needs beyond the classroom.
The Office of Career Services (OCS) offers a multitude of services to assist students and alumni on their pathway to success. Explore different majors using assessments and research Engage with trained counselors through one-on-one counseling and skills workshops – ranging from mock interviews, resume critiques, to job hunting. Students and alumni are Empowered and Encouraged to investigate their pathways and network with employers to find the right industry for them. We work with companies and organizations to Employ our students during career fairs and on-campus recruitment.
In 1873, less than eight years after all hostilities were quieted from the Civil War, the Freedman’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church founded Wiley College near Marshall, Texas to allow Negro youth the opportunity to pursue higher learning in the arts, sciences and other professions.
The College is currently organized into four degree-granting divisions: the Division of Sciences, the Division of Education, the Division of Business and Technology, the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities, and one service unit, the Division of General Education and Special Studies. The latter Division, although not degree-granting, is responsible for the College’s general education and developmental education programs, and provides initial support and advisement to newcomers and transfer students.
There is an unyielding conviction among the faculty and administration today that learning occurs best in an environment that is academically challenging and supportive, which embraces the principles of academic freedom and shared governance. Overall, Wiley College remains a viable force in the academic community. The institution continues to be a leader in innovation. It was the first “Thinkpad College” west of the Mississippi River. This initiative allowed all students to use a laptop in their daily classwork. This technologically advanced classroom allows students to become more proficient in using technology by obtaining class assignments, tests, and research projects via the Internet on a “24/7” basis. Each residence hall is equipped with Internet capabilities for students to perform extensive research from the comfort of their rooms.
For the last 137 years, Wiley has offered educational opportunities to Texas, the nation, and the world. The Wiley College spirit remains vibrant in the face of remarkable social change, global terrorism, economic strife, and adversity. The beacon light that is Wiley College will shine forth unsullied for generations to come.
