Moore College of Art & Design is dedicated to excellence in art and design. Founded in 1848, Moore is the first and only visual arts college for women in the United States. Through its undergraduate Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees for women and its coeducational Graduate Studies programs, Moore cultivates creativity, promotes scholarship, and prepares its students for professional careers in the arts by emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, risk-taking, and strong communication skills. The Galleries at Moore introduce significant regional, national, and international artists to the community through distinctive exhibitions and educational programs. Moore's BFA programs are designed to cultivate each student's creative talents and provide the technical and professional skills essential to building a thriving visual arts career. Students learn from award-winning, professionally active faculty who bring real-world knowledge and expertise into the classroom and encourage excellence, creative exploration, and self-expression to prepare students for lifelong learning and leadership in their chosen field. Moore also offers its students an array of minors that complement their course of study and advance their interests in support of their artistic and professional goals.
Distinctive in its integrated, intimate approach to advancing today's visual art landscape and the field of art and design itself, Graduate Studies at Moore seeks to connect and educate artists of all walks of life united by their creative purpose.
Moore's Graduate Studies community consists of unique programs in Socially-Engaged Art, Socially-Engaged Studio Art, and Art Education with an Emphasis in Special Populations that prepare motivated people of all identities with the skills, knowledge, and resources to become professional artists, designers, and teachers. Made up of select students, faculty, and staff, we test, perfect, invent, and forever alter art practices and policies on a local and global scale.
Candidates can work closely with professionally active faculty artists, educators, and designers and work independently with professionals in the field. Each program hosts an annual symposium featuring national and international guest speakers, focusing on contemporary issues in art, education, and design. The three programs' summer intensive, evening, and weekend year-round scheduling are well suited for working adults seeking to acquire new skills and perspectives in their current studio, design, or teaching practices.
The Post-Baccalaureate Program in Art Education is designed for individuals who have an undergraduate degree. The program offers opportunities to launch an exciting new career as an art teacher. Course requirements include proven teaching and learning practices in contemporary Art Education. Admission is based on college transcripts and portfolio reviews.
Moore is a small art and design college that understands that you are a creative individual with unique needs. While it is true that we are the first and only visual arts college for women in the United States, we also offer a selection of coeducational graduate, post-baccalaureate, and continuing education programs. With a 160-year legacy of educating students for careers in art and design, Moore is the only professional college of art and design in Philadelphia specializing entirely in the visual arts. Adult Programs provide men and women with significant options to expand professional development in a select group of rewarding design fields. Youth Programs mirror the diversity of art and design areas in Moore's BFA program and are designed to inspire creativity, build skills, and have fun.
Founded by Sarah Worthington Peter in 1848, Moore College of Art & Design is the first and only women's visual arts college. Established as the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, the College continues to thrive on the promise of empowering women to achieve financial independence by providing high-quality, career-focused education.
Today, Moore celebrates its rich legacy. Sarah Worthington Peter's original vision continues to drive the College's mission to educate women for visual arts careers. Though our first major was textile design—established during the Industrial Revolution, of which Philadelphia was the center—the College now offers 10 BFA programs including Animation & Game Arts, Art Education, Art History, Curatorial Studies, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, and Photography & Digital Arts.
In recent years, we have expanded our curriculum to include Post-Baccalaureate programs in addition to continuing education programs for adults and youth. In 2009, Moore introduced coeducational graduate-level programs.
