We believe that education is not just a matter of age or social status. We actively support research. We are open-minded and dedicated to influencing the lives of people around us. Masaryk University is a selective and most desired university in the country. It was founded in 1919 as a counterpart to Charles University in Prague, named after T. G. Masaryk, the first President of Czechoslovakia.
Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (7 March 1850–14 September 1937) was an Austro-Hungarian and Czechoslovak politician, sociologist and philosopher, who as an eager advocate of Czechoslovak independence during World War I became the founder and first President of Czechoslovakia.
In 2010 Masaryk University became the first Czech institution to hold the European Credit Transfer System Label, a certificate issued by the European Commission as proof of the university's high educational standards and a guarantee of the correct implementation of the credit system in all Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. The adoption of this system helped support the internationalization efforts, which increased the number of international students, who now make up about 20 % of all students.
Our online award-winning Information System (IS) is one of the things we are most proud of. It facilitates the entire administration process by reducing unnecessary paperwork. Enrolment, scholarship applications, course registration, and many other procedures can be made online, from your home computer, with just a click. It is prevalent among students and serves as an inspiration to many other universities – not only Czech ones. Research is one of the top priorities of Masaryk University. The university intensively cooperates with accredited international universities and research institutions. Its scientists and scholars have gained extensive international recognition in various fields.
A key role in research activities is played by the CEITEC – The Central European Institute of Technology. It is a consortium of six partners, including the most prominent universities and research institutes in Brno. Its laboratories for nearly 600 scientists and more than 1,200 students, equipped with first-class technologies, create optimal conditions for both basic and applied research in the fields of life sciences, advanced materials, and technologies.
We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to work at MU, regardless of age, gender, social status, or medical condition. We provide students with experience, support graduates launching their first careers, and help mothers on maternity leave balance work and family.
53 % of the university workforce is made up of women. Over a third of our employees have some part-time job arrangements. We pay special attention to the disabled. Job seekers with physical or sensory disabilities are provided with personal assistance services and specialized technical equipment. Everyone, without exception, has the same rights and obligations. We will always remain committed to promoting equal opportunities. Employing several dozen people with hearing impairments has brought Masaryk University a company of the year award for 2014, presented by the Silent World company.
The new university campus, which was officially opened in 2010, is one of the university's greatest achievements. It consists of 24 teaching and research buildings, including a library, auditorium, gyms, other sports facilities, halls of residence, restaurants, and cafés. The campus is directly adjacent to the university hospital, which is a unique advantage for medical students. All of the university buildings in Brno's historical center have also undergone extensive renovation and modernization to meet world-class standards.
