Massachusetts College of Art and Design welcomes applications for admission from students with a minimum of a high school diploma who are passionate about the visual and media arts.MassArt offers a bachelor of fine arts degrees in 18 disciplines spanning the fine arts, design, art education, art history, and graduate degrees in the fine arts, design innovation, dynamic media, architecture, and art education. Certificates are available in fashion, graphic, furniture, and industrial design.
Our graduates are near and far. They are innovators changing the way we interact with the world, art educators working with students worldwide. Around the corner, industrial designers, medical device pioneers, entrepreneurs, contestants on Project Runway, famed photographers, renowned painters, Academy Award-winning set designers and savvy media pioneers. In 1873, the Massachusetts Normal School opened its doors in response to the Massachusetts Drawing Act, a progressive 1870 mandate requiring all cities in the Commonwealth of over 10,000 residents to include drawing in their public school curricula ("normal schools" were the precursors to teachers' colleges). The Industrial Revolution changed the way the world functioned, and mid-19th Century Bostonians believed that industry was not the only way to build a stronger nation. Art, they felt confident, was also essential to growing a powerful country, a vital economy, and improving and advancing citizens' well-being. London and Paris - thriving cities with grand museums and galleries - were compelling examples.
At MassArt, we have always believed that art is an igniting force for positive change. We have offered a bright gate where access to world-class art education is not defined by economics or privilege from our earliest days. We are committed to providing an education and the promise of a future based on talent, ambition, and drive. As the first publicly supported freestanding visual arts college in the US, we take great pride in our ability to nurture and support students with extraordinary creative promise, regardless of limitations in college prep opportunities or financial status.
Our reach is excellent. Through dynamic community partnerships in and around Boston, students gain real-world experience, and we bring art and design into the public sphere for multi-generational audiences. We bring art and design into spaces where access is otherwise limited, from designing the exterior wrap for mobile medical vans to delivering innovative workshops at schools and libraries, curating neighborhood art exhibitions, and beautifying city fences. At MassArt, we have held close to our original mission of providing an inclusive, academically, excellent, rigorous curriculum that turns students into practicing professionals in their chosen fields. We seek individuals who are both independent and collaborative, and who recognize the importance of both.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design is a public, independent college of art and design. The College's academic and co-curricular programs prepare students from diverse backgrounds to participate in the creative economy as artists, designers, and educators and to engage in their society's well-being. As a national leader in visual art and design education, the College influences contemporary culture through its students, alumni, faculty, and staff's creative accomplishments.
MassArt's undergraduate curriculum offers students a strong foundation in traditional methods and the tools to push boundaries and develop their voice through contemporary practice.
MassArt's graduate programs offer artists and designers the opportunity to master their craft and advance their careers through highly specialized course work, individual attention with world-class faculty, and state-of-the-art facilities such as studio and exhibition space.
MassArt faculty and instructors are working artists, designers, and educators who apply their real-world experience and their expertise to the classroom to help students hone their skills and develop their artistic practice. International artists visit MassArt to lecture, critique, and exhibit their artwork in the Bakalar & Paine Galleries. The cultural education provided by these artists supplements the diverse academic and artistic offerings at the College.
MassArt's Professional and Continuing Education program offers more than 100 classes and workshops in various art and design disciplines each semester to students of all ages.
