Goucher expects all of its students to pursue a standard set of learning experiences. Students have great freedom to determine and follow their interests. In this pursuit, students enter into a space of inquiry—the Goucher Commons, the new curriculum, with other students and the faculty. Ultimately, students will gain integrative learning experience and develop proficiency in areas that will prepare them for future jobs.
Goucher's First Year Seminar - formerly known as Frontiers courses - introduce students into the pleasures and demands of a liberal arts education. First-Year Seminars offer a selection of small, discussion-based courses taught by faculty from across the disciplines. As with seminars for upper-level college students, each class explores a specific topic in all its complexity and connects you with students who share your interests.

Simply put, it is your chance to make a valuable connection between the classroom and real-world experience. Along the way, you get to explore different ways of thinking, to communicate, working, learning, and living. We have more than 60 programs in over 30 countries, giving you the opportunity to go to college in Australia, practice peacebuilding while at school in South Africa, intern in London, or enhance second language skills over a summer in Costa Rica, France, or Germany. The possibilities are endless.
General support and mentoring are provided to all students through several one-on-one relationships with Goucher faculty and staff. Each student has at least one academic adviser, a full-time faculty member who helps the student identify academic goals, select appropriate courses, and use campus resources. New students have both an academic adviser and a staff adviser and a peer mentor who is an upper-level student.
Advising is more than scheduling classes to take. At Goucher, advisers work closely with students to enhance inquiry, creativity, and critical and analytical thinking. Academic advising aims to help students identify realistic academic and career goals, make connections among courses in the curriculum, integrate learning, and focus on self-awareness and self-efficacy. Through academic advising, students learn to become Goucher College members, think critically about their roles and responsibilities as students, and prepare to be educated citizens of a global community.
Since founded in 1885, Goucher has been firmly committed to excellence in liberal arts and sciences education.
Originally named the Woman's College of Baltimore City, Goucher was founded in 1885 by a group of influential Methodists led by the Rev. John Franklin Goucher, who, with his wife Mary Fisher Goucher, deeded the college the land to begin its original campus in downtown Baltimore. The college was renamed after the Goucher's in 1910 and relocated its campus in 1954 to a 287-acre wooded campus in Towson, MD, just eight miles north of the heart of the city. The college has been coeducational since 1986. In 2010, Goucher observed its 125th anniversary, bringing generations of students past and present to remember the institution's history and celebrate its future.
