Southwell was a boys-only school from 1911 until 2000 when it went fully co-ed and in 2011 celebrated its Centenary. From one staff member and one student in 1911 Southwell presently has 600 students and 100 staff. Its present-day all-around education cherishes its traditions, history, and the people who over time have made it the great school it is today.
Southwell is a dynamic, inspiring, and nurturing, Year 1 to 8, coeducational, Day and Boarding School that is set in the heart of Hamilton City on a magnificent campus. Southwell offers an educational experience designed to inspire individual achievement, strong personal values, and confidence for life.
Our learning is personalized, modern, relevant, and meaningful to the individual. Small class sizes, specialist homeroom, and subject teachers allow our students’ minds and gifts to be exposed. Our learning is underpinned by our Southwell Values of Integrity, Respect, Caring, Resilience, Creativity, and Excellence. We define excellence as ‘giving your best.
Southwell Boarding is a caring, family-based environment with around 50 to 60 boys and girls from Years 5 to 8. Southwell Boarding develops life skills like no other environment.
We love our sport at Southwell and offer a wide range of sports options with specific training and match times weekly. We offer internal options, play in Waikato club competitions and have historic midweek fixtures with 10 other Independent Schools played in both summer and winter seasons. We aim to create better people through sport.
Everyone performs on the stage at Southwell as we aim to expose our boys and girls to a magnificent array of oral, musical, instrumental, and theatrical opportunities. We aim to develop each student’s confidence to perform and act before others. From choirs to individual speech tuition, our opportunities are vast. The Performing Arts at Southwell provides students with a range of high-quality learning experiences in the disciplines of Dance, Drama, Music, and Speech. Children are inspired to achieve artistic excellence whilst developing the confidence and creativity to freely express their ideas and feelings. Performing Arts courses are taught by qualified, experienced specialist teachers in a well resourced, nationally acclaimed teaching facility which consists of purpose-built Music/Drama classrooms, a Dance space, and a magnificent Auditorium. Southwell Students enjoy learning about and through the Performing Arts and engage deeply in the many exciting opportunities available to them.
