EduCativPosted May 13, 2021SharePosted May 13, 2021 Ysgol Maes Owen is a community school, catering for children aged seven to eleven years. The school is situated in Kinmel Bay, an economically mixed urban area, and serves the town itself and the outlying areas of Towyn and Rhyl. The school opened in 1950 and is maintained by Conwy County Borough Council. The number of pupils on the roll fluctuates during the year as many newcomers from outside the region are attracted to the area. Currently, there are 216 pupils on the roll who are taught by eight full-time and one part-time teacher. There are two full-time teaching assistants and there are two people designated to assist Family Liaison and nurture. Additional Teaching Assistants are funded via the Poverty and Deprivation Grant. The school is organized into three mixed classes in lower school (Years 3 & 4), one mixed Year 4 & 5 class, and three mixed classes in upper school (Years 5 & 6). In addition, there is a twelve place Special Resource Base provided by the Local Authority (LA) catering for pupils with moderate learning difficulties. This is managed by our Resource base teacher, who is supported by one full-time HLTA and one part-time teaching assistant. A significant number of pupils are from areas that are described as socially and economically disadvantaged. 34% of pupils are entitled to free school meals, which is significantly higher than local and national averages. The school has a very transient population with 20 joining and 23 leaving during 2015 – 16 and 20 joining and 12 leaving during 2016 – 2017. There are currently four pupils who are Looked After Child, (LAC).45% of pupils are on the SEN register. 28% are at School Action, 11% are at School Action Plus, 6% are School Action + with contract and one pupil has a Statement of Special Educational Needs. 24% of the pupils have been identified as More Able and Talented for Literacy and Numeracy. English is the sole or predominant language in all of the pupils’ homes. Three pupils receive support teaching in English as an additional language. Welsh second language programs of study are taught.
