Welcome to Westonbirt School, our unique school housed in a Victorian mansion and set in 210 acres of beautiful English parkland. Here our students can be carefree, feel secure in their inspiring surroundings, and can enjoy the fresh air and extensive space.
Our cohort of students stems from the local area, further afield, and internationally. Two-thirds of our pupil's board and one-third are day students. Our house system ensures every student enjoys a sense of belonging and they are encouraged in all they do by a committed team of nurturing pastoral and academic staff.
Westonbirt offers exceptional senior education in small classes with expert teaching staff dedicated to ensuring each student reaches their full potential. As a non-selective school of just over 200, our achievements are competitive with many larger schools. Students are regularly selected to play lacrosse for England and Wales, Drama productions have aired at the Edinburgh Fringe to high acclaim, over two-thirds play at least one musical instrument. Over 90% of Sixth Form students go on to their first choice universities including Cambridge, Durham, Cardiff, Bristol, UCL, and Central St. Martins.
Westonbirt is proud to offer a range of examination opportunities and at Year 11 (16 years), we follow a combination of the GCSE and IGCSE program followed by A levels and a selection of BTECs for the Sixth Form. Westonbirt Academic Department is keen to stay ahead of current curriculum changes so the impact on learning is minimized and opportunity maximized. Our ultimate aim is that every student who leaves after Year 13 does so as a confident, well-rounded individual prepared to tackle modern-day life in a global and rapidly changing world.
In Year 7 all students follow a core curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, Spanish, French, Spanish, Classics, Latin, Art, Design and Technology, Drama, Geography, History, ICT and Computing, Music, Physical Education (including games and swimming), Religious Education, Textiles and Food Technology. There is also a detailed program of Skills for Life in addition to tutorial time. At the end of Year 8, an opportunity to drop a language is introduced to enable students to focus on a preference to develop valuable skills and allow them to study subjects which they may wish to pursue at GCSE. In Year 9, there is a detailed guidance program ensuring that sensible GCSE choices are made in preparation for the start of Year 10.
Core GCSEs are taken in English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science as a double or triple GCSE and either Latin and/or a Modern Foreign Language. In addition, several optional GCSE subjects are chosen. This varies depending on the ability and aptitude of each individual. Throughout these two crucial years, all students continue with Physical Education, ICT, and Skills for Life lessons. From Year 11, students embark on a program preparing them for entry into the Sixth Form that includes Year 12 taster lessons and Careers Profiling.
Westonbirt has dedicated Learning Support and ELT Departments, both of which enhance the learning with individualized learning plans for each student as required.
Our success with many of our students supported in these areas is significant with a vast number securing exceptional results. The departments pride themselves on a professional and personal, inclusive approach.
Specialist teachers in both areas provide a screening test on entry, for all students and prescribe lessons accordingly to meet the learning requirements of your son or daughter.
