Welcome to St Luke's CE Primary School in Islington. St Luke’s is a happy, caring school where the virtues of faith, hope, and love permeate.

We actively ensure that every child is valued as an individual. Faith is very important to us as we endeavor to live out our Christian values in our everyday lives. At St Luke's our motto is 'always seeking to improve, which means that we are committed to continually improving our school so that we provide the very best education and the most exciting opportunities for our children. We are very proud of our outstanding children.

It is the children who make St Luke’s a special place, and we are proud of all their achievements. We work hard to foster and secure an enjoyable environment that excites, challenges, and motivates each child, enabling them to reach their full potential. We have an organized ‘Learning for Life’ program based on core Christian values that build children’s capacity in fellowship, trust, thankfulness, endurance, compassion, and service.

We have a strong partnership with parents and together we do our best to equip children with the confidence to embrace our ever-changing world. Within the context of Christian belief and practice, we aim to serve the community by providing an education of the highest quality.

Our vision for the federation is that every child will thrive as both schools provide a broad range of opportunities where teaching is outstanding and makes a high impact upon learning and achievement. This is the core purpose of the federation two fantastic, successful, happy schools that are at the heart of the EC1 community.

St Luke’s is a nurturing, dynamic, and diverse community, rooted in Christian values, where children are encouraged to be the best they can be. The following values are our guiding principles:

  • Trust
  • Service
  • Kindness
  • Friendship
  • Perseverance
  • Thankfulness

We will do everything we can to help every child understand the importance of these values through the way we behave towards them and each other. Each child’s educational, emotional and spiritual welfare is vitally important and we commit to doing our very best for every child. Our vision is:

“Reaching higher than I dreamed, becoming the person I can be, doing the best that I can, for the world and me.”

St Luke's Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We have several policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment, including our Safeguarding and Child Protection.

The Early Years at St Luke's provides a warm, safe environment for all children both physically and emotionally. It is a place where all learning is valued and where children can lay the foundations for a lifelong love of learning and reach their potential across the 5 Every Child Matters outcomes staying safe, being healthy, enjoying and achieving, economic well-being and making a positive contribution.

In the light of the changes to the National Curriculum, St Luke’s has made some changes to our curriculum in school. Our vision is to keep the children's needs, interests, and ‘Learning for Life’ at the heart of everything we do which gives us a rich, broad, and balanced curriculum. We actively teach the skills and knowledge children need to prepare to prepare them for life, as well as the essential attributes of resilience, endurance, and inquiry.

For English and Mathematics, we will be following the New National Curriculum whilst still adopting a unit-based approach, e.g. in English, pupils will spend several weeks immersed in a particular text type like adventure stories. In Maths they may spend a week or so learning about a topic like fractions or shape. All will be in line with the new expectations set out in the National Curriculum and so there may be a period of transition to meet these standards.

We will continue to use the IPC (International Primary Curriculum) for the Art, Design and Technology, History, Geography, and International aspects of the curriculum. In addition this year, Science will now be taught as a discrete subject. Some topics have changed, but we feel this is still the most engaging way to get pupils involved in their learning.

Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE) will be taught using the updated scheme of work from Islington, and Religious Education (RE) continues unchanged to be taught through the LDBS scheme of work. This has a Christian basis, but pupils also study other major world religions. Children also have a weekly Philosophy for Children lesson (P4C) which encourages them to think deeply and question the world around them.
