Ours is a very friendly school serving the families and children of Fallowfield, in the Diocese of Salford. Our work is built around the teaching of Jesus Christ, and the love of one another and God are central to all we do. We want every child to do well, so we work hard to provide a curriculum that helps all children to shine.
We recognize that to do well, children have to feel good about themselves, and we place a great emphasis on developing children's self-confidence and self-esteem. A broad and engaging curriculum is supplemented by a wide range of after-school clubs and visitors, to enable children to celebrate their unique gifts and talents. We have been awarded Sportsmark and Artsmark Gold for the quality of our broad curriculum. Our children are polite and respectful, people who visit the school, including OFSTED, comment on their good manners, and we are very proud of them. Our teaching staff and Governors are dedicated to securing the best outcomes for all children, and we continually seek to improve what we do to enable our school to be the best it can.
The Foundation Governors at St. Kentigern’s R. C. Primary School are appointed with the primary obligation of implementing the Bishop’s policy for Roman Catholic schools within the diocese. St. Kentigern’s is a Roman Catholic primary school provided by the Diocese of Salford and is maintained by Manchester Local Authority as a voluntary aided primary school. The school’s governing body is the admission authority and is responsible for taking decisions on applicants for admission. The governing body plan to admit 60 reception children each year.
At St Kentigern’s we pride ourselves on being a happy, caring, and welcoming community, where the learning environment and the wide range of opportunities offered, help every child reach their full potential and make the most of the gifts and talents are given to them by God. Our dedicated and committed team of staff and governors work together to make sure that the children in our care are a respected part of our Catholic community, one where they feel valued and secure.
In March 2016, the chaplaincy team had the very important task of creating a new mission statement for our school. Every child in the school created a hand with five words they associate with our school. Together the team chose the top five reoccurring words and made three mission statements which were delivered to Mrs. Harrold and the governors. They selected the final mission statement which our team beautifully worded: “We learn and pray, in faith and love.”
At St Kentigern's we promote safe and sensible use of the internet and other digital forms of communication. At school, we have careful and considered management of our facilities which are explained in our E-safety policy but we understand that as parents you are often concerned about how to continue this safe practice at home.
Pupil Premium funding is to provide additional support to pupils entitled to/have been entitled to free school meals in the last 6 years, or pupils who are looked after by the Local Authority so that their attainment can be maximized.
In making provision for Pupil Premium children, we recognize that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged. We also recognize that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered for, or qualify for free school meals. Therefore, we reserve the right to allocate the pupil premium funding to support any pupil that the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged.
All Manchester Local Authority (LA) maintained schools have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and /or disabilities and are supported by the LA to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school. All schools are supported to be as inclusive as possible, with the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) being met in a mainstream setting wherever possible.
St Kentigern’s Primary School aims to treat all stakeholders, including pupils, prospective pupils, staff, governors, and other members of the school community favorably and, wherever possible, takes reasonable steps to avoid placing anyone at a substantial disadvantage. The school aims to work closely with disabled pupils, their families, and any relevant outside agencies to remove or minimize any potential barriers to learning, which puts them at a disadvantage, but allows them to learn, achieve and participate fully in school life. The school is active in promoting positive attitudes to disabled people in the school and in planning to increase access to education for all disabled pupils. As part of the school’s continued communication with parents, carers, and other stakeholders we continually look at ways to improve accessibility.
The school has children with a limited range of disabilities which include Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Hearing impairment, Diabetes, Reduced Vision, and serious medical conditions with related susceptibility to infections. When children enter school with specific disabilities, the school contacts the LA professionals for assessments, support, and guidance for the school and parents. We have a few children who have asthma and all staff is aware of these children. Inhalers are kept in the classrooms and a record of use is noted. Some children have allergies or food intolerances/cultural food choices. All medical information is collated and available to staff, on the staff notice board, the head teachers’ office board, and next to the central first aid point by the hall.
