Springburn Academy is a non-denominational, co-educational, comprehensive secondary school in the northeast of Glasgow. Currently, we have around 800 pupils from the local areas of Balornock, Barmulloch, Milton, Possilpark, and, of course, Springburn. Springburn Academy’s motto of “Success for All” is the guiding principle for all curricular and wider achievement activities within the school.

Springburn Academy is a non-denominational, co-educational, comprehensive school. It caters to pupils aged 12-17 and offers a wide range of courses. The school is situated in the northeast of Glasgow and its roll in August 2009 was 1037. In 2002, as part of Glasgow City Council’s “Project 2002”, the school moved into a brand new building with 5 ICT rooms, 8 Science labs, 4 Art & Design rooms, 4 Technical rooms, 3 Home Economics rooms, 3 Physical Education areas, and 3 Music Rooms. The well-equipped library also has several computers. All school classrooms are equipped with a ceiling-mounted LCD projector and a Smartboard and have access to computers. In 2005, due to the increase in the school roll, an additional two classrooms were provided and a mezzanine floor was added to the Fuel Zone area. A new multi-gym has also been built.

The library is at the heart of the school. Regular engagement with the library ensures that all pupils can develop information literacy (IL) skills, which will help them in subjects throughout the school. A pupil with good IL skills will be able to search for, understand, summarize and present information well.

Also, reader development activities are designed to encourage “Reading for Pleasure” (reading outside of what is required for school). One of the jobs of the librarian is to ensure that every pupil can find “that book” that will open up the wonderful world of reading for them. Evidence shows that reading for pleasure has a fundamental effect on reading and writing ability, text comprehension, self-confidence as a reader, and breadth of vocabulary. Put simply, reading makes you more clever!
