Southmead is a two-form entry Primary School for children aged 3 to 11, situated in Southfields, South West London, very close to Wimbledon Tennis and the lovely Wimbledon Park. We are also home to an integrated children’s center for children aged 0-5 and their families as well as a 16 place ASD Base. Here at Southmead, we are very much aware of the responsibility that we have in ensuring that your children love coming to school. We are a diverse community and value every child as an individual. We are proud of being an inclusive school and we celebrate our cultural and linguistic diversity. We are ‘Proud to Belong’.

Our priority, here at Southmead, is to make sure that your child fulfills their potential in their academic, creative, personal, physical, moral, and spiritual development. We want our children to develop a life-long love of learning and leave our school as confident and successful young people, looking forward to the next stage in their educational career. Underpinning everything that we do are the Southmead 5 Rs - our core values of responsibility, resilience, reasoning, resourcefulness, and reflectiveness. Our belief is that through exploring the importance of these values your child will go on to become extraordinary citizens making a useful and important contribution to society.

We believe very strongly that partnership with parents is crucial to a child’s success and encourage parents to take an active part in their child’s school life. I know that by working together, we will continue to build on the strengths of the school to make it even more successful.

Southmead has a diverse community and all major world faiths are represented, and all cultures valued. We have adopted 24 moral values which provide a common understanding in school and a framework from which to work in creating a cohesive atmosphere. The values are broken down into a particular “Value of the Month” and provide a focus for assemblies and some parts of the curriculum. Our school has become a harmonious place where children can thrive, work, and develop their full potential.

Our school motto is Proud to Belong. This relates to every area of school life - learning, teaching, behavior, environment, and atmosphere. It means that every member of our school goes that “extra mile” to make the school the best it can be. We are very proud of all our achievements.

At Southmead Primary School and Centre for Children and Families, we are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents, and carers receiving services from the school, irrespective of race, gender, disability, faith, or religion, or socio-economic background. We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those connected to the school feel proud of their identity and able to participate fully in school life.

The achievement of pupils will be monitored by race, gender, and disability and we will use this data to support pupils, raise standards and ensure inclusive teaching. We will tackle discrimination by the positive promotion of equality, challenging bullying and stereotypes, and creating an environment that champions respect for all. At Southmead Primary School and Centre for Children and Families, we believe that diversity is a strength, which should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn, teach and visit here.

We do this by:

• Treating all those within the school community (e.g. pupils, staff, governors, parents, and the community) as individuals with their particular abilities, beliefs, challenges, attitudes, background, and experience.
• Creating and maintaining a school ethos that promotes equality, develops understanding, and challenges myths, stereotypes, misconceptions, and prejudices.
• Encouraging everyone in our school community and Children’s Centre to gain a positive self-image and high self-esteem.
• Having high expectations for everyone involved with the whole school community.
• Promoting mutual respect and valuing each other’s similarities and differences and facing equalities issues openly and honestly.
• Monitoring and reviewing all the above to secure continuous improvement in all we do.

At Southmead, we use a Picture Curriculum in our school. Each term, every class studies a different painting or sculpture. All of that class's learning and topics are then taken from that painting. This inspires and motivates our pupils, and allows our teachers to teach with greater depth. It also allows for a lot of cross-curricular work, as subjects are frequently inter-woven in our topic lessons so children can understand the links and connections between subjects and ideas.
