In Shawlands Primary School we aim to provide a calm, nurturing, purposeful learning environment which both challenges and supports our pupils to achieve their very best in everything they do. We aim to encourage each child to do this by making learning stimulating, relevant and enjoyable developing the emotional, social, creative, physical, and intellectual skills necessary to fully engage in today’s world. We want to inspire all our pupils to become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors, and responsible citizens.

We recognize that to enable each child to do their best, it is important that we work in close partnership with parents and carers. We will work with you to encourage your child to work hard and behave well. The support of parents and carers is invaluable to the life of our school and Shawlands Primary has a culture of very positive parental engagement. We will strive to engage you in and keep you informed of developments and we look forward to your participation in a range of activities and events in the life of the school.

The Curriculum for Excellence is not only about what children are learning, it is about new ways of teaching and learning, with more emphasis on skills for learning, work, and life.

In Shawlands Primary we have spent considerable time looking at our teaching methodologies and strategies. Our approaches to Learning and Teaching are now:

• Give children ownership
• Encourage independence and responsibility

In this session, we moved forward by examining our curriculum design. The Shawlands Curriculum Plan was designed by staff at the beginning of the session including teaching blocks of Language, Maths, Health & Well Being, Interdisciplinary Learning, Discrete Subjects, and Personal Learning. The future is to examine robust systems of assessing and tracking learner’s progress as they move from Early Level through to Second Level.
