Riversdale Primary School provides a happy, stimulating learning environment, where every child is valued. We seek to develop the attitudes, skills, and knowledge, which will help pupils achieve their true potential through praise, encouragement, and high expectations of work and behavior. As a rights-respecting school, we also believe strongly in mutual respect for all members of our community, be that local, national or global.

We aim to:

• Provide a broad and balanced curriculum with a sound grounding in the basic skills of Literacy and Numeracy, together with the independence and confidence to apply these.
• Foster lively, enquiring minds and enthusiasm for learning by treating children as individuals and building on their success. We want children to develop the skills to become lifelong learners.
• Make children feel valued and respected so they can be confident and secure willing to seek help in the understanding that overcoming difficulty is part of the learning process.
• We will empower our children to become global citizens, to enable them to make valuable contributions locally, nationally, and globally, and to contribute to our world’s sustainable future.
• Develop, through example and explanation, a sense of responsibility, self-discipline, and respect for one another, the school, and the community.
• Show the importance of socializing and collaborating with sensitivity, consideration, and humor.
• Encourage aesthetic and spiritual awareness.
• Allow children, staff, parents, governors, and the community to share in our achievements and take pride in our school.

The National Curriculum for primary schools has undergone major changes, which were implemented in September 2014. At Riversdale Primary School, we aim to provide a balanced, broad, and inclusive curriculum that stimulates and challenges all children to learn.

Riversdale Primary School teaches children through topics that are linked to a class reading book, providing students with an engaging context for their learning. We call this the Power of Reading. The objectives for all subjects are taken from the 2014 National Curriculum and have been purposefully allocated to each year group to ensure that there is sufficient coverage and progression across the school.

Each year, the children will be taught new skills and acquire new knowledge, along with deepening their understanding of each area of the curriculum. Riversdale is very lucky to have art, language, sports, dance, drama, and music specialists working within the school, to help the children develop a love of learning in a variety of different subject areas.

We strongly believe that education is not restricted to the gaining of knowledge. We work with children to foster self-esteem and confidence, as we believe that education includes the personal development of each child as an individual.

To this end, SMSC is embedded throughout the curriculum, ensuring high-quality spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development in all subject areas. As a UNICEF right respecting school, we also acknowledge the importance of developing students’ awareness of global citizenship and the rights and responsibilities that we all have, to ensure a positive future for all.

Each subject area has its policy at Riversdale, as we believe that each and everyone is important in its own right. We believe strongly in providing the students with a broad, balanced, and engaging learning experience, and so, each curriculum area policy has been carefully considered to ensure that our provision suits the varying needs of our students.

We enjoy meeting the many visitors who come to our school to have a look around. Tours take place each Thursday morning during term time when you can come and meet the Headteacher and be shown around the school by a dedicated member of staff/parent. It is a great opportunity to see our lovely school for yourself and to take a peek into each classroom.
