At Northside School we believe that Every Child Matters. We provide a safe and healthy environment where pupils enjoy and achieve and make a positive contribution to the life of the school.
Northside School aims to develop well-educated, happy, and well-rounded children who have developed a love of learning, independence, initiative, and understanding of others. We provide a supportive and caring environment where every child matters and where all cultures are respected and valued. We thrive in a multi-cultural community where working and co-operating with others is encouraged.
At Northside, we value the diversity of all children and adults in the school and recognize the individuality of interests, abilities, motivation, and learning needs. The development of inclusion at our school is seen as the responsibility of everyone, not just a few, and is not viewed as being only to do with high educational needs.
We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is relevant to the age and experience of the children and by the National Curriculum strategies. We use teaching methods that motivate children to be actively engaged in their learning and that promote self-esteem and independence.
We encourage parents to take a full and active part in their child's development. Many opportunities exist for participating in school life and sharing information about your child's progress. We believe in a philosophy that maintains high standards of behavior from the whole school community through positive expectations and a caring ethos.
At Northside we believe every child is unique and special and pride ourselves in the development of fully rounded, confident learners. Children access the SEAL (Social Emotional Aspects of Literacy) curriculum. Also, nurture groups and buddying activities are available. We have a learning mentor who will liaise with parents and schools to ensure that their children are given as much pastoral care as possible. All classes will have PHSE/circle time sessions, there is very successful peer mentoring support for the younger children provided by the KS2 children. We also provide Art therapy from qualified therapists. The children are encouraged to speak to staff about anything that is troubling them, and they can use worry boxes to deal with matters anonymously.
Northside school is in a refurbished Victorian building with landscaped playgrounds. A major re-modeling of the school building took place in 2000. This included a Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) with landscaped play area, a new dining hall, landscaped KS1 playground, and an ICT suite In 2004, an outside block was refurbished to create an Arts block with a fully equipped music and art room. There are interactive whiteboards in all classrooms from Nursery to Year 6, as well as a board in the ICT suite and a movable interactive board for group work. In addition to the ICT room, we have 6 netbooks in every class and 64 pads for use in class.
