Newlands Academy is a special school and is proud to be part of the Academies Enterprise Trust (AET), one of the largest multi-academy trusts in England. It is a secondary school for boys aged 11 to 16 with social, emotional, and mental health needs.
Our main goal is to ensure that every student is provided the highest quality of education possible in a safe, supportive, and caring learning environment. Working together as a team we are committed to helping each student achieve their very best. At Newlands we have high expectations for all our students, learning is our core purpose and we provide all our students with a bespoke and relevant academic curriculum that is individualized to meet each student’s needs. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for all students to develop a range of life skills and moral values that enable them to better their life chances.
Our Core Principles: We are a caring and accepting community where everyone's voice is valued. We see potential in all our pupils and offer them a fresh start. The pupil's learning and emotional needs are at the center of every decision we make. We give pupils time and space to gain an understanding of their own identity we strive to nurture, educate and empower them through to adulthood. We work in the academy with humor, justice, compassion, and forgiveness we understand that all members can make mistakes and that we learn from one another.
At Newlands Academy, our overriding aim is to ensure that each student, whatever their ability, should unlock their full potential. Developing students’ English and Literacy skills are, of course, fundamental to unlocking their potential across the academic curriculum and beyond. We hope to broaden students’ experiences of the types of texts they encounter and foster a lifelong appreciation for reading.
At KS3 students cover the three strands that make up the English curriculum: Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening. We cover a wide range of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, and films, to teach our students the skills they need to succeed at GCSE.
Our KS4 students work towards the Cambridge IGCSE Language qualification. They complete three pieces of coursework in school as well as a Speaking and Listening assessment. They sit one exam in the Summer to complete the qualification.
In our PSHE sessions, we try to give our student body the tools necessary to be well-rounded citizens and members of society. Students study a wide range of topics and gaining a good understanding of politics, sexual education, and the law. Students also learn key skills such as debating and public speaking.
At Newlands Academy, all students will have three lessons in maths. Here at Newlands Academy, we encourage our students to see mathematics as not just arithmetic but as a functional tool for their future lives.
We strive to provide a real-world application to mathematics so students can see its practical use. We aim to develop student’s confidence and fluency with numbers and measures as well as the understanding of how data are gathered.
