Hodge Hill College is an 11-16 co-educational school serving a wide area to the north and east of Birmingham. It is an 8 form entry school with 1200 pupils on roll. The school serves a rich and diverse area with pupils coming from some 37 different feeder schools. During the last four years, we have been working hard to transform our learning environment and our outcomes for pupils.
At Hodge Hill College we believe that all our pupils can achieve if they have confidence, a clear focus, and actively participate in learning. British Values: of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance permeates college life, underpins our curriculum delivery, and supports the high expectations we set our pupils.
We have traveled a great distance as a college during the last three years. We are a ‘good school’, with good results, but want even more for our pupils. That’s why our focus is on pupil self-management and independent learning. Without these skills, our pupils will not reach outstanding outcomes.
Our ethos drives our personal and community development. Our focus is to develop pupil confidence, aspiration, self-management, and hard work which enables all our pupils to Dream, Believe, Achieve. Our pupils need high aspirations for their careers and working adult life to provide focus and direction. Our pupils need the confidence for self-belief, the ability to try and sometimes fail, but through that failure learn, developing wisdom and maturity. By taking that leap of faith, through self-belief we achieve our goals. Hard work, focus, determination and the right attitudes to learning help us overcome obstacles and achieve all our life goals.
Our college CARE brand: Courtesy, Aspiration, Respect, and Empathy is embedded in the daily lives of our pupils. It helps them to develop maturity, character, and resilience. British values are an intrinsic part of college life delivered through the college ethos and in particular through our Care brand. They also underpin our assemblies, thought for the day, and college displays. A large number of projects have been undertaken by different year groups to explore the theme and communicate it to the whole college population. Also, external agencies have been invited to provide training on INSET days to ensure that staff is fully aware of what they should be promoting. Our state-of-the-art facilities ensure that pupils get the best possible opportunities to succeed. Success comes with continued partnership working with parents and families to ensure that all pupils fulfill their potential.
The curriculum at Hodge Hill College aims to provide breadth and balance for all pupils at both key stage 3 and key stage 4. Pupils all undertake studies in the core subjects: English, mathematics, and science, together with humanities, language, arts, creative, design, and sports-based subjects. This is maintained at key stage four to ensure that pupils gain a balance of qualifications which will provide them with the widest possible opportunities for progression into the sixth form. This breadth also offers diverse opportunities for university, apprenticeship, and employment choices. Balance ensures doors are held open at all times to all pupils.
As a college, we are committed to ensuring that pupils gain an understanding of the contribution the arts play to enriching their lives, and the key part they play in the national and global economy. Learning to contextualize our common history, geography, and religious beliefs build greater understanding, character, and stronger communities. Finally, healthy bodies support healthy minds and as a college, we believe, all our pupils need to understand how these two issues are intertwined. Enabling all pupils to take charge of their health secures good learning and future economic security for our community.
