At Grasmere, we understand that to learn well, children need to be happy, safe, valued, and engaged at school. We have an inclusive approach to ensure every child is supported and encouraged to reach their full potential.
We have a dedicated staff team who are skilled in finding ways to stretch and challenge children of all abilities to ensure progress. Attainment at Grasmere is among the highest in the Borough and we have exceptionally high expectations of children’s learning and behavior. Key to our success is our close working relationships with parents, carers, and the wider community.
We believe in giving children enriching opportunities through our curriculum with creative arts, music, and physical education at the heart of learning, enthusing children in all they do. We know that our children will leave Grasmere feeling confident and fully equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful individuals and lifelong learners. At Grasmere Primary School we are committed to high expectations in all areas of school life. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum with a focus on Literacy, and Mathematics Physical and Creative Arts Education.
As a result of the Government’s Childcare Bill, we are obliged to provide a total of 30 hours of child care to eligible children (15 hours as a free entitlement and then an additional 15 hours for working families.) Parents will need to complete an online eligibility check if they are going to apply for this additional funding. Parents will need to include the eligibility code on their nursery enrolment form. We will need to amend our admissions criteria to be able to offer 30 hours of free childcare to eligible parents, in addition to maintaining our provision of 15 hours of free entitlement to three-and four-year-olds.
At Grasmere, we are proud to offer a happy, inclusive and caring learning environment at our school. We want to make sure that every single one of all our children can develop to their full potential academically and socially so that they have the best possible start to their lives.
The Governing Body works closely with the Headteacher and staff. We are responsible for monitoring and evaluating the performance and effectiveness of the school, ensuring that the budget is well managed, and supporting our excellent and dedicated staff team in their work.
We have a wonderful parent and carers association here at Grasmere, Friends of Grasmere School, or FROGS as they are known. They are very active and organize many activities and events throughout the school year. The funds raised by FROGS are hugely important and help to provide the children with as many experiences as possible while supporting the curriculum.
Grasmere School has an active and committed team of governors, one third are parents and carers of children at the school. Governors play an important role in our school life by volunteering their time to support the strategic development of the school.
The Governing Body has responsibility for the strategic development of the school in the areas of safeguarding, finance, curriculum, inclusion, welfare and discipline, health and safety, premises, staffing, and school meals. As a Governing Body, we work with the headteacher and the school staff to have an overview of policy for the school in each of these areas.
Grasmere school has an outstanding offer for this area of the curriculum which includes lessons taught by teachers, additional sessions taught by specialists, after-school clubs, junior and infant clubs, and competitions that the school takes part in.
The Department for Education will give Grasmere £8,890 in the year 2016-17 towards the costs incurred in providing opportunities for our children in sport. We provide lessons in Orienteering, athletics, triathlons, sailing, kayaking, squash, tag rugby, swimming, gymnastics, hockey, ice skating, tennis, cricket, and football. We take part in competitions related to these in local and national championships including the annual Hackney championship.
Grasmere Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
Since Modern Foreign Languages became compulsory in Primary Schools in 2012, Grasmere Primary School has been teaching Spanish to its pupils from age 3. We believe that our nursery and primary school children should learn a foreign language from age three. This would give our pupils a much stronger foundation, which they can build on in secondary school to become fluent. We also believe that learning another language is good for young children and it will give them more options in education and work. As research suggested that being taught a foreign language can help to improve conversation skills and literacy in English, as well as benefit study in other subjects. Please inform the school of relevant details concerning your child’s medical condition so that we are aware of any problems which might arise and can deal with them accordingly.
Similarly, please send a note if there is any allergy regarding food at lunchtime. You must notify us of any changes to medical conditions. If your child has taken ill or has an accident at school we will try to get in contact with you immediately. It is therefore essential that we have details of where you can be contacted in an emergency. Please make sure you inform us of any change of address, change of work, or change of telephone number.
