Firrhill High School opened in 1960. The official opening ceremony took place on 7th October 1960. Firrhill High School is a six-year comprehensive school situated in the southwest of Edinburgh. The school occupies an attractive site overlooking the Pentland Hills and has a roll of over 1100 pupils and 130 staff. Our newly refurbished and extended accommodation provides an excellent learning environment for our pupils.

At Firrhill we are focused on developing the whole child and provide many opportunities for young people to achieve success. Through high-quality learning and teaching from our committed and caring staff, we provide a supportive and challenging educational experience. We have a strong record of academic achievement and provide a wide curriculum to meet the range of pupils’ needs while our program of extra-curricular activities, trips, and other events enhance learning and develop a range of skills including teamwork, self-confidence, and leadership.

Our shared values of mutual respect between staff and pupils and our high expectations of success within a caring and supportive environment form the basis of our positive school ethos. Within our wider school community, we promote tolerance and understanding of one another and we value diversity.

Firrhill High School is a Rights Respecting School and currently holds the Silver: Rights Aware Award. The Silver: Rights Aware Award is the second stage of the Rights Respecting Schools program. Silver level charts Firrhill’s progress through 3 Strands:

• Teaching and Learning about rights – through training, curriculum, assemblies
• Teaching and learning through rights – by modeling rights-respecting language and attitudes
• Being ambassadors for the rights of others – developing as rights-respecting citizens

We will now continue our journey towards Gold: Rights Respecting. This is granted by Unicef UK to schools that have fully embedded children’s rights throughout the school, in its policies, practice, and ethos.
