Florida Atlantic University was founded in 1961, in Boca Raton on an 850-acre site located near the Atlantic Ocean. The campus is conveniently located halfway between Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale and offers a broad range of academic programs, activities, and services.
The Boca Raton campus provides an exciting and supportive learning environment for students. The Student Union hosts student activities and meetings. It is 2,500-seat Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium enable students to enjoy performances ranging from rock bands to the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra. The campus supports two cafeterias and has an attractive array of accommodations for its residential students. The Boca Raton campus is also home to FAU'sFAU's Division I Intercollegiate Athletics program and facilities. Its recreation complex includes an aquatic center, gymnasium, tennis courts, wellness center, track, and various fields for club and intramural sports competition. The five-story S.E. Wimberly Library houses an extensive collection of monographs, serials, and other academic resources. Computer labs, study lounges, a media center, and tutoring services also provide valuable academic support for students. The Boca Raton campus hosts art exhibits, theatre productions, and concerts in its two galleries and theatre. Visiting performers and speakers add to the artistic and intellectual vibrancy of the campus.
Ten distinguished colleges offer more than 170+ degree programs in fields that span the arts and humanities, the sciences, medicine, nursing, accounting, business, education, public administration, social work, architecture, engineering, computer science, and more. Academically accomplished students take advantage of honors programs on the Boca Raton campus and the complete, four-year honors curriculum offered by the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College on the Jupiter campus.
The Division of Research supports and promotes FAU research and scholarly activities by providing the tools and resources needed to be competitive, building new directions in research, ensuring responsible research practices, and communicating the importance of research within and beyond the university. The division also oversees four university-wide pillars and is responsible for economic development and entrepreneurial activities involving faculty, staff, students, and the broader university community.

On a bright October day in 1964, Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th President of the United States, squinted into the South Florida sun and declared Florida Atlantic University officially open in his famous Texas drawl.For a sitting U.S. chief executive to officiate a new regional university's dedication was most unusual – but, then, FAU was no ordinary institution of higher learning. From its very inception, FAU was envisioned as the first of a new breed of American universities that would entirely deliberately throw off the ivy-covered trappings of the tradition-bound world of academe and invent new and better ways of making higher education available to those who sought it.
Indeed, in his dedication remarks, President Johnson said that America had entered an era "when education is no longer only for the sons of the rich, but for all who can qualify." Speaking on an outdoor stage before a crowd of 15,000, he called for " a new revolution in education." He said that a fully educated American public could vastly enrich life over the next 50 years.
Seated on stage behind the President as he spoke was an array of Florida'sFlorida's top political VIPs, including Governor Farris Bryant, U.S. Senators Spessard Holland, and George Smathers, U.S. Congressmen Claude Pepper and Paul Rogers, and a banker named Thomas F. Fleming, Jr., who, more than anybody else, was responsible for bringing America'sAmerica's newest public university to Boca Raton.
