Craigentinny is a non-denominational primary school that takes children from nursery age to primary seven. The building is within the Craigentinny Community.
At Craigentinny we work together to promote the values of honesty, equality, kindness, respect, perseverance, and resilience. These values are promoted through all aspects of school life.
In addition to our well-equipped classrooms, we have a music room, a cooking room, a full-sized gym hall, a library, and a dining room which can be used for other curricular areas. There is an after-school club in association with the Royal High Primary School which gives working parents the flexibility they need and is a well-used facility. We also offer a Breakfast Club each morning from 8 am.
The school grounds are extensive, boasting the only green playground available in the area. There are a large grassy area and a mature garden which is used by the nursery for outdoor learning opportunities, a trim trail facility plus a community woodland area. An outdoor classroom was constructed in 2011 and provides a valuable resource for learning and teaching.
Additional Support at Craigentinny – an additional support need comes from anything which is a barrier to learning. Most of all schools will have some children with additional support needs of some kind. The education authority has many legal duties towards pupils with additional support needs.
The Pupil Council is made up of pupils from P4-P7. We meet once a month during Committee time. Our job is to look at ways we can improve the school and we get suggestions from the other pupils in school. At the moment we are looking at ways to improve the school playground. We did a questionnaire and the improvement that got the most votes was for more challenging equipment installed on the grass area at the front of the school. The PTA has offered us £5000 towards this so we are looking at different types of equipment.
As with all of our pupil committees at Craigentinny, the Eco Committee encourages pupils, staff, parents, and the wider community to voice their views, opinions, and ideas. The committee values the views and opinions of the whole school community and encourages pupil's voices.
The committee holds regular meetings, assemblies, sends out questionnaires, and carries out surveys. We feedback to everyone about the work we are carrying out. The committee meetings are lead by the pupils themselves and draw on the views of the whole school community. In the last session, our Eco Focusses were Litter, Health and Wellbeing, and Transport. We are currently carrying out and analyzing our Audit to determine what our focusses will be moving forward.
