Cilffriw Primary School is located about 2 miles North East of the town of Neath. It is situated at the bottom of Graig Gwladys Country Park below a wooded hillside in the lower Neath Valley. The catchment area consists of the village of Cilffriw including Penscynor, the village of Aberdulais, and both sides of the main Neath Valley trunk road from Llangatwg to Ynysgerwn.
Set in beautiful rural surroundings, the school has a large campus consisting of landscaped areas, shrubberies, flowerbeds, vegetable beds and a polytunnel, grassed areas, a nature trail, a conservation area with a pond, plus a large sports field with established hedgerows and trees. The Environmental Committee and School Council are continually developing extensive grounds to create new areas for play and learning opportunities.
Opened in September 1980, the building is well planned along with a split-level design. The school has ten classrooms, including a self-contained Early Years unit. Each pair of classrooms opens onto a practical area. There are rooms for quiet study, a shared library, a reference library, a computer suite, and a large multi-purpose hall. The administrative level has a headteacher's study, secretary's office, and staff room. The school is very well resourced.
