Bradburn School situated in the southwest of Edinburgh, Bradburn School provides a positive learning environment for pupils aged 3 to 18 years with additional support needs. Pupils have complex, long-term additional support needs and require a significantly modified learning environment. The needs of learners are primarily associated with learning disabilities and significant visual/sensory, health, and medical needs. The School is situated in the southwest of Edinburgh and is part of the Firrhill Campus along with Oxgangs Primary School and Firrhill Secondary School. Our pupils come to Bradburn from all over Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Bradburn is a multidisciplinary school and staff include Teachers, Nursery Nurses, Pupil Support Assistants, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Physiotherapists. Medical personnel is also on campus. Facilities in Braidburn include a soft play room, sensory area, therapy rooms, medical suite, dental room, hydrotherapy pool, gym facilities, an ICT suite, and a conference room.

We aim for all pupils to benefit from our fantastic hydrotherapy pool and we host an annual swimming gala for learners with additional support needs from other schools. Our Nursery and Primary playgrounds have been upgraded and we are currently working alongside the Friends of Bradburn School charity to raise funds to develop our Secondary outdoor environment. The School benefits from an Independent Living Base, The Flat, where pupils from every class spend time each week. It has a living area, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom where pupils develop skills for life intending to develop independence. We are proud to be an Inclusive Communication Environment.

We strive to provide the best educational environment where we can improve outcomes for all children, young people, and their families. Central to this is a strong partnership between staff, pupils, parents, professionals, and the wider community.

Bradburn currently has a nursery as well as 10 classes. Our maximum class size is 8 pupils with a staff team consisting of 1 teacher and 3 support staff.

At Bradburn, we challenge and educate our learners whilst valuing and nurturing everyone in an inclusive environment. We promote maximum independence in an atmosphere of mutual respect, compassion, trust, and fairness.

At Bradburn we aim to:

• Provide a coherent, broad, and balanced curriculum from 3 to 18 in line with the principles of Curriculum for Excellence and appropriate to the complex needs of the individual learner.
• Work with learners, parents, and therapists to set appropriate individualized learning outcomes, which are shared, evaluated, and regularly updated.
• Provide a total communication environment.
• Challenge our learners to develop their full potential through a variety of approaches including inclusive technology, the MOVE program, the visual and hearing impairment support team, and a sensory curriculum.
• To develop skills for learning, life, and work through a range of experiences and activities in school, via split-placements and in the wider community
• Work with partners using robust self-evaluation approaches to improve outcomes for learners and develop strong relationships.
• Use a holistic approach to promote health and well-being and equality and to celebrate diversity.

To complement the supportive learning environment Bradburn also offers a range of therapies to the pupils to support their health, well-being, and development. We have a multi-disciplinary team on-site consisting of physiotherapists, speech-language therapists, occupational therapists, and a visual impairment team. The therapists are involved in all aspects of the school, from assisting with hydrotherapy sessions in the pool to ensure each pupil has the most appropriate cutlery at lunchtime to enabling pupils to communicate using low and high-tech devices.
