Bowden House School in Seaford, East Sussex provides specialist, weekly, residential education and care for boys between the ages of 9—16+. There is an option for students to attend daily if they live within an easy traveling distance from the school. All students are subjects of a Statement of Special Educational Needs or EHC Plan which identifies their social, emotional, and mental health difficulties and how these have impacted their education within mainstream or specialist day provision. Bowden House School provides teaching within small, structured classes where there is access to additional support to aid all curriculum areas including an Emotional Well-being Team to aid the learning process. The Care Staff work closely with the teaching staff to ensure that there is a ‘whole school’ approach to learning with a joint structure, involving the students, to devise alternative strategies to assist them in managing their behavior and therefore improve their chances of success in educational attainment. The school provides an Independence Unit for post-16 students who attend local colleges and support from the staff in the school to aid a successful transition into further education, training, or employment.
Bowden House School recognizes effort and performance both within and outside the school. A ‘Privilege’ system operates throughout the school and is based upon improvement in academic and social areas of the curriculum with students earning additional activities and agreed rewards. A daily points system also encourages students to earn points throughout education and care time towards a reward of their choice. The school has established positive and supportive links with parents/carers local authorities and a range of external agencies to provide support within the school and at home, when appropriate.
Bowden House is a residential school providing a nurturing, therapeutic environment. It caters to the individual academic and social needs of its students over a 24-hour curriculum. The school actively promotes social inclusion and aims to allow each student to develop the required skills to participate as a successful member of society. The school acknowledges the impact that many of its students have experienced in previous educational settings where their social, emotional, and mental health difficulties have limited their educational progress.
The school offers a curriculum that reflects that accessed in a mainstream school but is delivered by specialist teaching staff supported by Teaching Assistants and Care Staff aimed at promoting a willingness and aptitude for learning. The joint approach of all staff in the school helps each student to recognize the consequences of their inappropriate behavior develop less destructive methods of expressing their feelings and work towards a greater sense of personal responsibility for their actions.
Bowden House School places a high value on the importance of working closely with its students their families or carers referring authorities and other agencies. Health and emotional well-being are promoted throughout the 24-hour curriculum and are integral to improving outcomes.
At the point of admission, each student is treated as an individual and following a period of review and assessment, will work within an Individual Learning Plan which incorporates their academic and behavioral targets. It is expected that the diverse skills of the teaching and care staff and the high level of specialist support, will lead to a period of stability that will give every student the best chance of a positive return to their home environment.

The students of Bowden House School experience an educational program similar to that offered in mainstream schools. However, with the expertise and high student-to-staff ratio, we can personalize learning to facilitate sustained progress. The result of this approach means the full National Curriculum with the addition of other subject areas under a range of awarding bodies effectively extends the student’s skills and abilities. There are six class groups with a maximum of six students in each class. Each class has a specialist teacher with a dedicated Teaching Assistant.
