Welcome to Albion Primary School. We are extremely proud. It is our pleasure to welcome you to our warm and friendly school. The aims to tell you about life here, how we work and what we feel is important to us as a school community.

We have high expectations of all our children. We place great emphasis on personal, social, and emotional development by encouraging caring attitudes, mutual respect, self-discipline, and self-confidence. We take pride in our diverse community and celebrate our cultural and linguistic diversity.

We aim to develop each child as an individual nurturing their strengths and talents we give our pupils responsibility and believe that they should be supported to do their best in a positive, hard-working learning environment. We place a strong emphasis on creativity and ensuring that our pupils enjoy learning and have fun. Each child is cherished and empowered to achieve academically good manners and respect for one another are highly valued.

Children at Albion are enthusiastic, motivated, and keen to learn, when you visit Albion you will see happy children whose excellent behavior reflects their enthusiasm.

Starting school is a very important time for children and parents and at Albion, we encourage you to participate fully in your child’s education. Close working relationships between parents, teachers, and children ensure the best possible opportunities for achievement, progress, and success.

At Albion Primary School We ‘Learn to do Well’. Albion Primary School is situated in the heart of Rotherhithe, a peninsula on the south bank of the Thames, and is in the London Borough of Southwark.

At Albion, we aim to ensure children become valuable and fully rounded members of society. We want every child to understand the basic British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs.

As the principal members of the school, children are encouraged to take on roles and responsibilities in the classroom, across the school, and in wider society. They participate in a wide range of school events and activities which support their all-round development and provide them with opportunities to model the Albion Values of:

Rotherhithe has been a port since the 12th century or earlier, and a shipyard since Elizabethan times. The docks were closed and filled in the 1980s and the land developed into riverside residential housing.

Albion is the oldest known name for Britain. There has been an Albion Primary School on our site since 1874. The second school was built after World War Two (around the 1960s) and the current Albion Primary school was completed in 2017.

The National Curriculum and Foundation Stage Framework are at the heart of the Albion Curriculum. Using these documents we have developed engaging units of work specifically designed for the children in our school. We know that during the time children spend with us they will progress both academically and personally children at Albion ‘Learn to do Well’.

In the Early Years (nursery and reception) we follow the Foundation Stage Framework. The Early Learning Goals (ELGs) establish the expectation that most children should reach by the end of the Foundation Stage. Assessment is carried out throughout the year to record children’s progress.

The ELGs are organized into seven key areas:

• Personal, social, and emotional development
• Communication and language
• Physical development
• Literacy
• Maths
• Understanding the world
• Expressive arts and design

Well-planned play is key to how young children learn, allowing them to make connections and reflect on what they have already learned. It should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience in which they explore, investigate, discover, create, rehearse, problem solve, revise, talk and consolidate their learning.

In Key Stage One (Years 1 and 2) and Key Stage, Two (Years 3, 4, 5, and 6) children follow the National Curriculum. The National Curriculum subjects are English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Religious Education (RE), Art and Design, Music, Computing, Design and Technology, Physical Education, Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE), and French in Key Stage Two.

At Albion, English and Maths are given a high priority as the fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy equip children for lifelong learning. We place a very strong emphasis on reading (using the Letters and Sounds phonics program) as we believe this lays the foundations for successful learning across all subjects. High-quality texts are chosen to support the teaching of literacy throughout the school and to extend the range of opportunities for children to demonstrate and develop their writing skills.

Children are taught according to their ability and teacher’s assessments ensure that lesson planning builds on their prior achievement, this process enables us to meet the requirements of each child. Interventions are planned, developed, and revised each half-term to support children that have specific needs in their learning.

Children at Albion may be taught in their year group, in an ability group, or individually as the need arises. We place particular emphasis on basic skills, the arts, science, and sports experience has shown that providing an enriched curriculum enables children to become successful and enthusiastic learners.
