East Stroudsburg Normal School opened its doors on September 4, 1893. Today, ESU is a comprehensive university in northeastern Pennsylvania offering 57 undergraduate programs, 21 master's programs, and one doctoral program. ESU is one of the 14 institutions in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. East Stroudsburg University is one of fourteen State-owned institutions in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education whose mission is undertaken on behalf of those who support it the—citizenry—through their governor and legislature, students and alumni, and other friends who share its commitments.

ESU will be an innovative and entrepreneurial university-educationally, socially, organizationally, and culturally-with an emphasis on quality and collaboration in everything we provide. As a scholarly community, its faculty, students, staff, administrators, and affiliates will be encouraged to be innovative and explore opportunities that will continuously energize and improve its mission as a learning community of the 21st Century. As a "university without walls," its sense of community will extend well beyond campus boundaries to embrace ESU's surrounding communities and region to become a model that other organizations will want to emulate.

The East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania will provide:

ESU offers 57 undergraduate programs in four different colleges. The Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs oversee academic policies and activities at ESU and is responsible for planning, coordinating, and assessing the University's academic enterprise.

The ESU Career Development Center staff can provide alumni individual guidance for developing an effective job search campaign at any point in your career. Employers can gain access to our online job board called WarriorCareers: a free tool for employers to list positions that get posted the very next day. Additionally, there exist numerous opportunities for employers to participate in career expos and special events.

Does your family member need assistance deciding on a career, choosing a major, finding an internship, searching for a job, or applying to graduate School? We offer assistance with all these areas as well as provide FAQs for parents and families. The Career Development Center partners with faculty and staff on the ESU campus to provide career assistance to students through presentations, workshops, and employment referrals.

ESU's academic programs combine personalized teaching and real-world experience with helping you gain the knowledge and skills employers and graduate schools are looking for today. Living on campus is considered an integral part of a student's overall educational and personal development. ESU provides a wide variety of activities and programs to help you participate in the ESU community and develop your skills and knowledge of leadership, wellness service, and diversity.

The Student Enrollment Center was established in 2003 as a "one-stop-shop" service center for our students, faculty, and staff. The purpose of creating such a center and our primary mission is to provide one location where three virtual enrollment offices exist to offer integrated services in financial aid, records, and registration, student billing, transfer, and veterans' concerns. The Student Enrollment Center reports directly to the Vice President of Enrollment Management.

East Stroudsburg Normal School opened its doors on September 4, 1893. A faculty of fifteen greeted 320 students who had entered the two-year programs in Elementary and Science Education.

Although the Normal School was originally privately owned, ownership was transferred to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1920, and the name was changed to East Stroudsburg State Normal School. In 1927, the right to confer the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Education and Bachelor of Science in Health Education was granted, and the School's name then became the State Teachers College at East Stroudsburg. In 1960, the College's name was changed to East Stroudsburg State College.

In 1962, the College received the right to confer graduate degrees, and the first three graduate areas were Master's of Education in Biological Sciences, General Science, and Health and Physical Education. In 1963, the College instituted a Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1969, the first Master of Arts programs, in History and Political Science, were approved.

In November 1982, the State System of Higher Education was authorized by Senate Bill 506. The College officially became East Stroudsburg University on July 1, 1983. In 1950, East Stroudsburg State Teachers College first received accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. This accreditation was affirmed in 1992 and, most recently, in 2017. East Stroudsburg University is a comprehensive university offering an array of undergraduate and graduate degrees.
